NyaChan -- I feel your pain! I've planned a cruise to Alaska
with my DDs, their BFs and my mom departing on 5/23. I'm footing
the bill for all of them, so it's a bit different than your
situation.
I completely agree that you should cancel if you feel the need
to and not be responsible at all for any extra costs to your
friends if they chose to go.

Agree with the bold and thanks for the link PVZFan. Very
informative (and my DD#1 sent me the same link along with
others.)
NyaChan, do check with your Travel Agent. As I understand it my
trip cancellation offers 100% cost of the cruise minus the trip
cancellation fee but the cancellation fee will be given as a FCC
(Future Cruise Credit). I have to cancel by March 31.
I'm going to send an email to my travel agent once I get
finished typing here.
I opened up with I feel your pain! Because my DD#1 is really
pushing for a cancel due to my mothers age (84) and me not being
spectacularly healthy. Not to derail your thread but I've never
taken a cruise before and this is my dream trip. So I'm crying
with you.

It’s also not so much about protecting yourself as the virus is
somewhat mild. It’s about protecting all of the vulnerable
people we come in contact with constantly and often unknowingly.
Despite this virus being compared to a flu, for which we have
vaccinations, this is obviously a serious problem. I just looked
at the state of Italy and was shocked and saddened.
This is a thing to take seriously. Loss of cash to a vacation
not had will not mean much in the future. For us all to be good
citizens and do our best to behave as asked while the
authorities figure this out it is really not too much to ask.
There is no need for alarm if we can take the precautions
necessary as best we can. International health services have
done amazing things in the past, we are living in the best times
ever to handle such a thing.
Please listen to the advice of the authorities.
If they are mistaken, the losses are insignificant, if there is
no mistake and this is as serious as it appears, lat least we’ve
done the best we can.

Ok thank you for the feedback. It’s unfortunate because I really
needed a break (lost out on two promotions so far this year so
I’m feeling a little battered), but I’m not going to ignore my
instincts that it is just not a good time to travel, especially
on a cruise. The amount I’d lose if I didn’t take advantage of
the refund offer is 2-3 thousand. If they were paying on their
own, I might be on the hook for 500-1000 but it might be less
(since so many people are cancelling, prices are quite low for
upgrades and bookings). I think I will just operate under the
assumption that our costs will remain our own and see if they
bring it up again. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

I can't believe the founder haven't cancelled due to their
elderly parents being part of the group. A full refund is a good
deal and the money can be used later or for a trip that's not so
confined.
If they find one confirmed case, they will quarantine the entire
boat for who knows how long. Watch the news. There are
containment zones and school closings even though confirmed
cases are relatively small in the entire US.
Nothing may happen and I'd hate to lose money but you need to
decide what you need to do for your peace of mind. Personally, I
think it's too soon to risk it since they don't really know much
about the virus. It's too easily spread.

Normally the default position is you should go on the cruise or
help pay if you dropped out.
But now the government has recommended not going on cruises, so
i would cancel and get my money back.
Many things are getting canceled because of Coronavirus. If they
want to take their chances, then fine, but you don't need to pay
for that.

If you were the only one that could cancel and get a refund,
then it might be a different story. All of you have the
opportunity to cut your losses, so this isn't leaving anyone
out.

That would be my fear, as much as or more than the virus itself.
The Diamond Princess cruise (the one in Japan) was a 2 week
cruise, followed by a 2 week quarantine, then 2 more weeks at
Japanese hospital if tested positive and then a possible
quarantine on arriving home. While there were lessons learned
from this example and they might not be trapping people aboard
ship in future, I still think you have to consider that at the
very least, you'll need to self-quarantine for 2 weeks after the
cruise.
Or just go on a hot weather cruise, because according to
Norwegian Cruises sales people, Covid 19 can't survive hot
weather. :-\

And it has been common knowledge for years that a large cruise
ship is a 'floating Petri dish' for any bug that's going. Anyone
remember the norovirus outbreak on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer
of the Seas in January 2014, in which more than 20% of the
passengers and 55 crew members went down with the vomiting bug?
No, in a pandemic a cruise ship is the last place you want to
be.

Say what?
There's a theory warm weather killed SARS, but this is not
acting like SARS. There have been proven cases in hot weather
countries. People need to stop acting like a "used car salesman"
and be all about the almighty buck. These are people's lives on
the line.

Plus, the US has now banned entry to the country, and it
wouldn't surprise me if this becomes a strategy.
I wouldn't want to go somewhere right now.
