OP here. No impulse items in this case. It was a government
liquor store. I was buying a bottle of wine. The angry lady had
something like a couple of 6 packs of beer and a bottle of wine
already laid on the counter. So heavy stuff to pick up and move
over. There was only one line open and the second cashier came
along when she saw the lineup getting too long.
As for the other topic of letting someone with two items go
first, that can backfire. That two-item person, for me, has
turned out to be the person who disputes the price, has 50
coupons, wants to pay half on credit card and the other half
cash, and has a gift card stored on their phone that they can't
quite open, and also needs to send the cashier away to a locked
cabinet to get some kind of restricted item like cigarettes. For
which they need to call the manager, to unlock a cabinet or get
a price override for the disputed price and then proceeds to
teach their toddler how to pay with coins. Lol.
