"Can I help the next person in line?"
By: Raintree Date: January 25, 2020, 11:14 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
It's actually a pet peeve of mine when people at the back of the
line race to the newly-opened cashier who has said "Can I help
the next person in line?" when they are clearly not the next
person in line, before anyone else has had a chance.
If I already have my stuff down on the counter though, and I'm
next anyway, I don't bother moving, unless it's one item and the
person in front of me appears to be having some huge issue that
is taking an inordinately long time to resolve. Otherwise, it's
just going to be a sec, right? So what's the point in moving
over if I am next anyway?
Today though, I had one item and I was about 3 people back.
There was one guy behind me. A new cashier opened and asked if
she could help the next person in line. I gave everyone else a
moment to react. The guy in front of me didn't seem interested
in moving over, as I think he was a friend of the person
currently being served. There was one woman in front of him who
was actually next in line, and already had her stuff (an armload
       of items) on the counter.
So after a moment of nobody moving, I went over there with my
one item and credit card handy. It was several booths down, so a
bit of a walk. I'm almost there when I heard, "Excuse me?!!!
Excuse me, I was next!!" The lady who the armload of heavy stuff
was starting to move away from the first counter. I said, "Oh,
sorry, go ahead!" But she glared at me. I felt like slipping
away with my tail between my legs. Honestly, it took her longer
to move her stuff and walk over there than it would have for the
cashier to scan my one item and for me to tap my credit card.
Was I a jerk to assume that since she already had her stuff laid
down on the counter and did not react at all when the other
cashier opened, that I was ok to go over there without asking
       her first?

I vote you weren't rude, and the other lady is not very good at
       life.

This is why I strongly dislike when they generically call the
next person in line. It's confusing. If there are multiple
lines, there are multiple people who are "next." Or, like what
happened to you, nobody moves so you go ahead, only to get
yelled at. You snooze you lose, Lady!
I like when the cashier actually pulls a specific person to be
next, or one line feeds multiple cashier stations (although that
       won't work for grocery stores).

Why do you think one line won't work for grocery stores? I
cashier at a store that uses one line and it has it's own set of
problems so I often long for the grocery store method.

Depends on the size and layout of the store, I guess. In the
ones I shop at, there's no room for one line with all the
customers. It will be one long twisted snake that wraps around
       the store and blocking aisles.

Another reason why I love to scan and bag as I go. When I get
to the coral of self checkouts I pretty much never have to wait.
The few times I did have to wait it was nice not having to
figure out which line might be to my advantage as you simply go
in turn to the next open register. Once there it is a 30 second
       process.

As a cashier, this drove me crazy as well, so I would walk up to
the next person and tell them what register to go to and I would
meet them there. Then, i would wait until that customer was at
the register before i would open up.

I agree and love the "not good at life" line.

       You were not rude.
It’s why I train my staff to walk over to the person who’s next
and escort to the register. (Works very well, especially if the
cashier is coming up from the sales floor and has to walk past
the customer). If the cashier is already at the register,
they’re supposed to make eye contact with the next customer
       they’re supposed to take.
