I went from "I refuse to use them. They take away jobs" to "I
will never use a cashier line again" in a two year span. I will
take my full cart to self checkout every time, because I hate
"How is your day ? What are you weekend plans ? Ooh, I see you
bought chips. Are you having a party ?" And I have no patience
in the cashier lines for the things other customers do that hold
up the line.

I like them. We got them in our store about 5 years ago. There
aren't any '12 or less' lines here and I hated going to pick up
one forgotten item and have to in lines with fully loaded carts,
so I can zip through there. I had suggested a '12 or less' line
for a long, long, time and they were never interested. Putting
in the self-check machines solved my problem. :)

I like them. Most of the time I will use it, whether I have a
full cart or just a few items. Not only does it feed my
introvertedness, lol, but it also makes me feel more "in
control," I guess, in terms of how my things are bagged and
whatnot. Because I interact with people so heavily at my own
work (bank teller/customer service rep), the less I can interact
with people outside of work, the better, lol.

It's difficult to check out in the self check-out lanes if you
have a cart full. There's not a lot of space to put the
merchandise either before or after it's check out and bagged.
Yet, my husband always insists on doing just that. I'd rather
wait in line twice as long at a lane with a cashier (it gives me
time to indulge my love of reading tabloids without having to
buy them!) any day.

My view continues to be: I abominate the loathsome things !
Yesterday at the supermarket, after getting my main batch of
shopping I realised that I'd forgotten one item: a tin of
meatballs. I took my trolley back to the main aisle, picked up
the required thing, and thought "mustn't behave in an utterly
wet fashion: surely even I can cope with the self-checkout for
just one tin of meatballs". Made the attempt accordingly; and
got into a mess anyway. First there was nonsense about "had I
brought a bag? -- put bag on the packing area", which I
seemingly misunderstood, thus gumming the works up. Then, owing
it seems to failing to press some button or pressing the wrong
button, my coins just would not go in and stay in: kept entering
the slot and going straight through into the cup underneath. I
had to seek the help of a staff member; remarked to her -- I
hope not too peevishly -- that I hated self-checkouts and found
myself totally unable to use them. There's no hope for me on
this scene: that would seem plain and clear.

Related story:
Yesterday, I went grocery shopping. I ended up having to go to a
regular checkout instead of the self-checkout. The cashier was
super-duper friendly - almost too much so. I don't think he
stopped talking the whole time he was ringing my groceries up,
lol! Although he was perfectly friendly and nice, it reminded me
of why I usually go to the self-checkout. I work with a lot of
people, so in my off-time, I try to avoid dealing with people.
:P

I'll admit I'm not always the most tech "savvy" person (I'm 49)
so I avoid self check outs personally because I just figure I'll
screw something up and need help from a store employee and make
myself look stupid and nobody wants that LOL. And I don't think
high tech stuff is always an improvement and I prefer
interacting with other people so I always go to a check out
register with an actual person. I don't think they're all that
common where I live anyhow. The only store I can think of that I
know has self check outs is the area Wal Mart. Maybe the area
Shopko store does too but I don't go there very often and I
haven't noticed any when I'm there. Having said that if other
people like using the self check out registers that's fine with
me. And if they want to check out a shopping cart full of stuff
using one I'm OK with that too. If the store doesn't have any
rules against it I don't see why people shouldn't be able to.
Even at the area Walmart I never see that many people using them
anyways and I've never seen a line of people waiting for them.
So I really don't believe any person checking out a cart full of
items at a self check out register is going to inconvenience
anybody that much if at all.

I've never yet managed to work the ones at M&S without staff
intervention, but seem to cope with the ones in French
supermarkets for some reason. Tesco, I am fine with.
Avoid like the plague in B&Q because I'm always buying something
stabby*, as is everyone else in the place, and the 'queue' for
the assistant to come and override makes it faster to go to an
actual human. They can recognise at a glance that I'm over 18;
perhaps self-checkouts should get a grey hair/wrinkle detector?
;) ;D Or train the assistant that if I'm over 18 on the first
scraper, I'm likely to still be of age on the screwdriver and
all other 'weapons'. ::)
* Their definition of "knives" includes screwdrivers, scrapers,
and possibly screws for all I know.

I only like them if I am buying one or two items. I will not
use them if I am buying a full order or if I have to buy
produce. The self scanners at my local Giant don't every seem
to have the produce item I am buying listed on the push buttons
on the screen and I am forced to explain to the Helper that the
new variety of apple I am trying out doesn't appear on the
computer push buttons.
I was behind an elderly lady trying to use the self scanner to
purchase one onion and one apple. The Helper had to yell
directions at her (why he didn't go stand next to her to help is
beyond me). Poor lady didn't quite grasp the fact that there
were many varieties of onions and apples and could not remember
which variety she had.

Not a big fan because they reduce jobs, however, I will use them
on occasion. I used the one last night at my grocery store and I
had to call the person on duty over 3 times to get it to let me
use my own bags and then once more because I had coupons.
Frustrating, to say the least. Plus, trying to wrangle groceries
while keeping my purse on my shoulder.
