One thing I believe is that we aren't obligated to live our
lives so that we never get in anyone else's way (I finally
figured out what "excuse me for living!" really means).
I do think that it's -nice- if you can say, "well, I have
coupons and a complicated question, so I'll use the manned
lane." but you're not required to.
You might also think it's going to be easy.
But self-serve lanes are really just to save the company money;
they're not there to make things go faster. So I think anyone
can use them at any pace they like.

I believe that if a customer knows ahead of time that quite a it
of help will be needed, then it would be best to go to a regular
lane. Otherwise, at least in the case of multiple self checkout
lanes, I do not think basket size should matter. If a store
chooses to post a limit then of course that limit should be
honored but otherwise I really don’t care if a person has a few
items or many.
Personally I prefer the self checkout when I see reasonable. I
like to choose how to bag my items and I do not have to go
through the script of “how was your day” “fine thank you and
yours.” I do it but on tough days I would love to go without
it. If I have a large number of items then I do choose the
regular checkout since usually the regular checkout is faster in
that case (and yes, in those cases I go through the social
script no matter what kind of day I am having).

I like self-checkout, but have sometimes had problems. If help
isn't easy to find it's very frustrating. My local supermarket
did away with their 4 self-checkout stations about 2 years ago,
and I really miss them.

Poundland has mostly self service tills, and I get on reasonably
well with them. W.H.Smith's and Marks and Spencer's tills lie in
wait for me, and go wrong.

My opinion is that I always have to get help - my item is not
marked correctly (I frequently buy fabric) or I get error
messages from the machine. My husband refuses to use
self-checkout because he says it takes a job away from someone
else. (Personally, though, I think it is because he is very
computer illiterate and that is an excuse.)

I use them for small orders and really love it when I’m feeling
introverted and don’t want to talk to anyone.
Funny story though, I was using one recently and the young woman
who was manning them ran over and made a big fuss “No, no, no!”
because she thought I was typing the qty in wrong for a
vegetable I was buying. It was 4 broccoli heads banded as a
group of 1. She jumped in and changed it to 4, making the total
~$16 for what should have been ~$4. I explained that was not
right and then she canceled and corrected it.
Then she tried to get involved with my next item and messed that
up also. So I said, “Can I just handle this? That’s why I’m here
in the self-checkout.” Kind of sharp, but seriously, if I’d
wanted someone else to scan all my items, I would have used a
normal lane.

I probably would have snapped at her, too. Then the way I report
that sort of thing is to suggest to the manager that the
employee might need a little more training then explain why. I
would not let her behavior go, even if she is just having a bad
day.

Yeah, it sounds like the "Helper" was trying to prevent people
from stealing from the store by entering smaller quantities than
they actually were buying but that her training (or eyesight? Or
common sense?) was lacking and she was messing things up. I
would hope the store would want to know that she needs more
training (or a different position) because it can't be good for
the store's reputation for her to be telling people they're
ringing up items wrong (for less cost) when they're not.

Self-checkout lanes tend to be "12 items or less" here.
I'll use them if I'm not buying alcohol. If there has to be an
override it's faster to use a regular checkout.
