Does anyone shop at Aldi? Their products have multiple UPCs to
make scanning quicker. Self checkouts would be so much easier if
items had multiple UPCs. On a rectangular box, my DH will check
all six sides and find the UPC on the sixth. It's like the thing
moves to actively avoid him! It's a good day for him if it's in
the fourth place he looks.

I'm a huge fan of the self checkout.
I find small talk with strangers in public fairly terrifying
some days, and being able to scan and pack at my own pace,
rather than try and catch my items as they go whizzing past, and
cram them into bags while the next person is right behind me, is
an absolute lifesaver.
But I also try to plan ahead.
I don't buy things at self checkouts that need cashier approval.
Its only ever a basket worth of shopping at once. and I try to
avoid busy times.

I do not like them. I work retail (mostly customer services) and
do now want to spend my spare time “doing my job”. Plus -
something always seems to go wrong at the machine and I have to
wait for the self check monitor to come fix it
It really bugs me when the store only has self check open on a
weekend evening and I’ve just done my major shopping for 2-3
weeks. Nope - not in the mood to check my own giant cart and
bag it.

I love self-checkout for the most party--mainly because I'm
faster then many checkers and I hate standing in line. However,
in respect to the people with few items, I usually won't use it
if I have over 20 items.

I'm a big fan of the self-checkout, mostly for speed purposes.
However, I do a great deal of my shopping at a warehouse store,
and they frequently have someone wandering around near the ends
of the belts and loading scanned items into a cart for us. I
usually have to remind them that I am 'woman with PURSE' and
please don't pile everything into the seat, because where am I
going to put my purse??
It was funny at the hardware store where they have someone
standing near the self-checkouts to help, and I got there,
scanned, paid, and was leaving in less than a minute. As I
breezed by him, I said, 'Not my first rodeo', and he laughed.

Aargh! I hate this too! Or, they fold that part in - hey, I
don't even have a cart full, why do they do that, then put
everything in the cart so you can't even open it up again?

I don't care what other people do, but I try really hard to
avoid the self-checkout, because:
1) I'm old. I have a bunch of crap that is in my brain, and I
need to keep it in there, and the gray matter it takes to
develop grocery checking chops might push something out that I
really need to keep. I'd hate to forget how to play "Stairway
to Heaven" just to get out of Food Lion quicker.
2) if the grocery store wants to give me a 10% discount for
checking my own groceries, I'll consider self-checkout. But if
I'm paying the same price I'd rather have a human other than me
check my groceries.
3) I only partially agree with the argument that you are putting
checkers out of work using the self-checkout, even though if
cutting labor costs like that means that I have a grocery store
a half mile from my house vs. keeping way too many people on the
payroll, the store going out of business, and me having to go
another couple miles to the grocery store. But if I have a
cart-full of groceries I want a human other than me to do the
checkout.
4) I hate doing it. I'm slow. I know that the person behind me
is thinking "what the hell is wrong with this idiot?".

I've come to prefer the self-checkout lanes for two reasons:
1. I prefer the way I bag my items. I find that
cashiers/courtesy clerks/baggers tend to either bag things in
such a way that they are either two heavy for me, the bags end
up tearing, or something gets squished, OR they use so many bags
that it seems wasteful.
2. I can make sure I don't leave anything behind. There have
been quite a few instances where I've gone through a normal
checkout only to discover when I've gotten home and unloaded
everything that something didn't come with me. Usually the item
is something very small that you wouldn't necessarily notice
right away - a tube of mascara, a birthday card, a packet of
Kool-Aid... Since the nearest grocery store is a good 20 minute
drive from my home, it's a big deal to have to go back and
retrieve the lost items.

I like them for small amounts. I can checkout faster than
waiting in line. 10 years or so ago (that's when I recall
starting to see them in downtown Toronto), they were glitchy and
needed cashier intervention a lot, but I find now, it's very,
very rare to have a problem.
For a big shop, I'll go to a regular checkout. Easier for me to
pack my groceries where there's more room (I've only ever seen
baggers out at the massive grocery stores in the burbs and even
that's rare), although at a couple of the big suburban grocery
stores, the self checkout had room for 6 or 8 bags.

I like self-checkout for small-ish trips. The process has become
smoother over the last almost-decade that they've been around
here. I remember buying a bunch of baby food and baby stuff 8
years ago and went through the self-checkout, not really
thinking about how many items I had. Later I counted 83 items in
my bags, and scanning was not as responsive in self-checkout
back then, and the bagging was definitely more glitch. I vowed
to be a "10 items or less" person in self checkout from then on.
Since then, the tech has improved dramatically and it is very
fast even with lots of stuff. I just find now that the space is
a bit small to manage a large load-- I run out of room and need
the cart for the scanned groceries before it has been emptied
out.
I'm fine with people using the self-checkout on whatever size
trip they want, just like the manned checkouts. The single line
for multiple checkouts really helps!
I only go to our Sam's Club a couple times a year, but I like
that they have the app that PPs have mentioned that allow me to
scan everything as I put it in the cart, then I just go to the
front of the store where they have 'cashiers' with handheld
devices who print out the reciepts for us. No lines, no waiting,
ever!
