I do like the single line for multiple lanes. I wonder why they
can’t do that for the manned check out lanes, too. It works at
the bank and the post office. In fact, that is just about the
only thing that works at my local post office! :-)

I really really wish they had this at Costco!

Automation has been having a huge impact on the jobs market ever
since the industrial revolution. Nothing really new, under the
sun.
[/quote]
Well yes, but that's automation of production. Until relatively
recently, the service industry believed themselves bulletproof.

The store I use could not accommodate 40 carts in one line! But
I wish would work.

It would depend on how they worked the lines. You'd have to have
one of those ropey things that guide people. It would be a huge
improvement over the two lines on each end snaking out in the
aisles, and all the ones in the middle squishing up to the first
display.

I hate self-checkout lines. I much prefer human beings.
Perhaps if the store gave me a discount for no service, I might
use self-checkout more. But there isn't any financial incentive
for lack of service.
After the closest grocery to our home installed self-checkout
lanes, they stopped scheduling cashiers between 10pm and 10am.
That's usually when I shop. If I choose to go during those
times, no service is available. There is a human (sometimes
unseen) somewhere to man the self-checkout but they are often
rude and act like it is an inconvenience. It's slightly out of
my way but I go to another store now that still offers the
services of a polite human being.

I once went into a grocery store at around 1am. It was really
eerie and kind of freaked me out so I limited my list, gathered
just a few things quickly and checked out of the self check,
never having seen another living soul!

Part of the problem of switching from having separate lines for
each checkout lane to a single queue for all checkouts (at least
at a big-box store or grocery store where people typically have
carts full) is that you have to figure out two things:
1) How to route the single line that is going to get long at
times so that the people standing in line aren't in the way of
people still shopping, and
2) How to alert the person at the front of the line that a
register is open and which register they need to go to.
These are much easier to solve when building a new store or even
when doing a full remodel.

A new grocery store near me, which I think wants to be a Trader
Joe's, does the "single line feeds to multiple cashiers" thing.
I also see it at other stores sometimes, like Michael's craft
stores. They usually have some kind of maze you have to navigate
with your cart, and then a light above the available cashier
that flashes or something to indicate they're ready. Sometimes
they also have a person standing there like a traffic cop,
telling people where to go (and NOT to go).
At the grocery store this was odd just because it was so new in
that context. I've never been there when it was super-busy, so I
don't know how well it works. Personally I don't mind, I just
want it to be CLEAR what I need to do and where I need to go.
One of the first things that discourages me from shopping
at/returning to a shop is if I can't figure out how the
check-out works and end up doing something wrong. Once I
accidentally stood in the wrong place to order at a Starbucks--I
didn't cut in front of anyone, but someone almost cut in front
of ME, because they didn't realize I was next in line. The clerk
was right there and it wasn't busy so she understood what was
going on, but she still chided me, and when I looked around, the
signs were kind of blocked by merchandise and angled away from
the way I'd approached. Then the clerk was very abrupt and
unhelpful when answering my questions, and I ended up leaving
without ordering anything. I kind of want to try one of those
coffee kiosks I've heard of, except that I don't want a bunch of
people breathing down my neck while I try to navigate the menu.
