I have tried to use them, but it takes a while to learn a new
skill since my stroke. So when something goes wrong and I’m
trying to figure it out, a clerk runs over to help, just doing
it and not letting me figure it out on my own, so I get no
learning. Now I just go to the manned checkouts.
That’s why I love my computers. I can take my time and learn,
but if I give up and need help, I can usually find it online. I
call our son about once a year. :)

The big stores near me have 2 kinds of self checkout: Limited
Items (so 10 items or less - for quick check out), and no Limit
check outs (full carts and all). Personally, I prefer them.
In terms of jobs, these stores also offer personal shopping
services: so you place your order online (and pay), someone goes
through the store picking up your stuff, and you just pick up
your shopping at a special spot. So, yes, they may have fewer
cashiers, but they make up the difference in the personal
shopping (and I have seen the shoppers more and more this last
year).

I like them and don't usually have too many problems. I'm
usually not inclined to use them if I have a large amount of
items, but one of the grocery stores near me, in addition to
having the "islands" as described by someone else (which are
much more conducive to a few small bags worth of items)
traditional long conveyer belts (or whatever they're called) so
people can scan all their items and then bag them (which is how
it's done at the manned station - there are no grocery baggers
at this store, never have been). That's a good idea for people
with lots of items.

I prefer scan and go to self checkout - our Sam's Club has it
and I can scan items on my phone as my DH adds them to the cart
and then pay from my phone. We show a barcode at the exit and
walk right out. Our Super WalMart is supposed to be getting the
system.
The self checkouts at our Super WalMart are getting better. I
used to routinely stand yelling, "There is no unauthorized item
in the bagging area!" "I've already bagged that!" "That's an
avocado! I used the right code!" We actively avoided them
because they were so fluky. They've been updated and work much
better. My DH and I met when we worked at a grocery store, he
was often my bagger, now that the self checkouts work better, we
can get a nice groove going and run through a good sized order
very efficiently.

I don't often use them. At the supermarket I use most, the
queue for self service is often so long that it is quicker to
use a manned checkout! What I do use, where available, is a
self scanner. Only a few shops have them (UK) but luckily one
local chain does. Its a handheld scanner so the items are
scanned as they are taken off the shelf, and packed straight
into a shopping bag. At the end, I just have to scan the final
total into a special till and pay.

One of our grocery stores has a similar system. Your cart might
be selected to be examined by a store employee after you check
out. If the contents of your cart match your receipt, you get a
$5 store gift card.

Love them. I'm not a people person. Other times, o don't want a
cashier seeing what I'm buying.

Count me in as one of the group that doesn't like them as they
are taking away jobs. I understand that they are not the only
automation that is doing this, but that doesn't mean I have to
support it.

Automation has been having a huge impact on the jobs market ever
since the industrial revolution. Nothing really new, under the
sun.
Personally, I love self checkout lanes. Over here, in Italy,
baggers are not a thing. On regular lanes you put your stuff on
the conveyor belt and have to stay on that side until
everything’s out of the cart, then you have to move to the other
end of the register and start bagging what has already been
accumulating while your were finishing off the cart, then you
have to stop and pay when the cashier is done, and go back to
bagging as fast as you can so that you don’t inconvenience the
person after you too much. Not unbearable, of course, but a
small stress I can definitely do without.
So I always go for the self checkout. I’m from the 80s so I’m
not a true digital native but I’m a digital grown-up, at least,
and find the systems rather intuitive and easy to use. The
weight checker is annoying, but functional, and I actually enjoy
scanning and bagging myself. As someone else has said, no matter
how carefully you place your stuff on the belt, the cashier will
somehow mess it up and nothing will get to you in a reasonable
bagging order. With self checkout, that poroblem solves itself.
As for the amount of shopping that you should bring to the self
checkout, anything usually goes. Some self checkouts have a
maximum amount of weight they can keep track of, before an
employee has to authorize you to move the bags and keep
scanning, and some can’t really accommodate a regular cart right
next to it. But I’d expect people to chose the checkout lane
that best suits their preference, for whatever reason, so I
don’t see why one person’s need for speed should trump another
person’s people anxiety, for example, and oblige the second one
to opt for a manned cashier despite their own discomfort. If
that person’s slow, she’ll slow down her lane putting stuff on
the cart, chatting with the cashier, paying, and bagging,
anyways.
Also, another advantage of self checkouts is that people form a
single line for a whole bunch of them and each person goes to
the next available one, instead of having to guess which
individual lane will roll faster.
