I love self check outs, but I do prefer for the stores to
indicate they are a 15 (or so) and under line. With more than
15, it will be so much quicker for an experienced employee to do
the checking and bagging. My preferred store has 6 self check
outs and the way the bagging area is set up for each scan
station, it's pretty hard to do more than 15 or 20 items.
Of course, I have no issue with stores that have multiple
express lanes set up so that there are 4 or 5 employees running
express lanes as I know those will go fast too.
I'm more irritated when I go to the store on a Tuesday morning
and they only have 1 "normal" lane open and all of the 6 self
checkouts open and I have 5 people with 2 or 3 items in front of
me using the normal lane. I want o offer to go show them how to
do the self checkout, but then I have to remind myself they have
as much right to be in that lane as I do (even though they have
an option and I don't >:()

I so totally agree with this, unless the self-checkouts are
designated “10 items or less” (or something similar). To me,
that denotes “this is for the people in a hurry.” So I think
slow moving folks are *fine* to take their time but should stay
out of those lanes.

I'm with Gellcom and Clearbeam: I use the human-managed
checkouts at least partly to resist automation and keep people
employed. I've also found them easier to use, and I often get
answers from the clerk -- "Where's there frozen juice?" of "Is
this Lucky going to keep stocking Tastykakes?" -- that a machine
beep won't give me.
The Berkeley Bowl market, where we shop most of the time (in
spite of the perpetually-jammed parking lot) doesn't have
self-checkouts, and I'd bet they never will.

I *love* self-checkout. I'm very particular about how my items
are handled & bagged, and honestly I'm faster than the cashiers
at the two stores I go to.
I'd rather be in and out, with my things bagged the way I like,
than take four times as long to have someone else do it.

I've always been conflicted. I use them, but lately I've been
reading about how they're putting people out of work, kiosks are
popping up in lieu of fewer employees in a lot of fast food
places (Panera and McDonald's are two I know of) so...where will
these people go and they are not all high school kids. Food for
thought, pardon the pun.

Automation or service is cutting a *lot* of jobs, and has been
ever since online shopping became a thing. It's a puzzle much
larger than supermarkets, and one that has to be solved,
slef-checkouts or not. (I'm in the "Universal Basic Income"
camp, personally.)

My main store has at least 20 staffed checkout lines and about
six self checkout lines. The self checkout lines are often
empty, while the staffed lines have lots of people using them.
My personal experience with using self checkout is that the AI
isn't smart enough yet. I've wasted a lot of time getting help
from a human store clerk to properly complete my order. So even
with small orders I head to a staffed checkout line.

I get my weekly groceries delivered now, which I LOVE. So I'm
rarely in stores that have self-checkouts.
In theory I should like them, because I usually don't have many
items, and I prefer to increase speed and reduce human contact.
But they never seem to work well for me. Every once in a while
it will go fine. But usually there's at least one thing that
won't scan, and the person has to come over and help me anyway.
Plus I find the beeping and everything very demanding. I just
understand the routine better with a human.

I love them. I retained skill from when working checkout was my
after-school job and I pack my groceries how I like them. Kids
these days just put anything in the same bag!

This is the only benefit I could see from using them! (well, if
I didn't always run into trouble, maybe I would see more.) But I
do compliment the bagger if they do a good job. I can usually
tell it's going to be done well depending on who is doing it.
Honestly, the ones who generally do the shopping for their own
families are the ones who usually do it properly!
