What's the general opinion on self-checkout lanes?

More and more of the major supermarket chains are designating
some checkout lanes for self-checkout. It's super-convenient
when you are only picking up a few things, but I'm seeing more
and more that people with full carts of groceries are starting
to use them. In particular, I watched a lady pull her cart up
and start slowly checking out each item (checked the label on
each thing before scanning it), then ask the attendant a
question about something every time she put an item in her cart.
She was still there checking out her things when I left the
store 20 minutes later.
My personal opinion is that, if you have a full cart, you should
use a manned checkout lane. I tend to think of self-checkout as
a sort of express lane, but then it occurred to me that there
are no limits posted for these most of the time. What do you
guys think?

If the supermarket doesn't have a rule about it, it doesn't
matter to me. I think it's logistically more difficult to deal
with a full cart at the self-checkout, though.

I don't like them because... they don't like me! :D Seriously,
I always have problems so I avoid them. But I sort of agree,
they are set up more for smaller cart loads. I don't think,
though, that I have ever been at a store where every one of them
was in use, so if someone wants to take the time and energy to
do all the work themselves, more power to them and less people
in front of me. Most stores I have been at that have them do
also have express checkout lanes for 12 or (fewer/less...!) so
someone with a small load can still go to a cashier. The self
checkouts have not caught on as I think the supermarkets had
hoped.

They're pretty popular where I am. There are usually enough
self-checkout stands so that if there's one person with a full
cart, it's really not going to make a big impact on how long you
have to wait.

I'm old fashioned. If I patronize an establishment, I expect
service from a real person. Human contact is good for us.

There are 2 grocery stores close to my house. 1 has self
checkouts, one does not. If I am stopping for only one or 2
things I usually use the self checkout at the store that has
them. I do my "major" grocery shopping on Saturday mornings.
Generally around 8:30-9. What makes me nuts is that the store
that has self checkout ONLY has those open on weekend mornings,
so I wont go there at all. The other store has no self
checkouts, but also only has the 15 item or less checkout open.
They always insist I pull my huge cart up and they check me out
there, but by the end there is a line of annoyed people behind
me and they will open a normal checkstand, at which point I just
look like a jerk who can't count.

Hi I am new here if I am not supposed to just jump in please
forgive me I haven't located your rules yet :-)
I prefer to use self check out because I am always in a hurry
and I'm pretty fast at the task. Also because I'm picky on how
things are handled. I really dislike when I'm buying produce
and the cashier handles it roughly and bruises something or when
they just jam whatever they want into the bags any which way.

Our large local chain had them for a year or two. Then one day
they were just all gone! My husband inquired as to what
happened and the manager he was talking with said they had lost
a huge amount of money due to theft. Too easy to just 'forget'
to scan half the items before putting them in your bag
apparently.

I love self-checkout lanes. What I hate are self-checkout
islands. They usually only have space to store a small handful
of bags and insist that you don't move the bags out of there.
Which is great... except there's a 24-hour supermarket that we
frequent that closes ALL of the manned checkouts between 12a-6a.
So for six full hours, those islands are all there is. Which
means if you like to go late at night because you want to shop
and scoot (which we do... shopping is one of those things I like
minimal interaction with, thank you online!), you're SOL.
