I always feel like there's something mildy "wussy" about me
because I drink my coffee light and sweet. Which means I need
all that stuff, and not just ONE little canister of
half-and-half.

I agree with this.
I think we're not obligated to live our lives so as to never
inconvenience anyone else, but I also think we should try when
we can to step out of the way, not take an unreasonably long
time, etc.
But we are ALSO entitled to ask politely for what we need. "Can
I get some half-and-half?" or "Could you make a little room?" Or
just feeling free to reach around someone to get what we need
with a small smile or nod ourselves. (After all, WE can go mix
our coffee at some other counter, right?)

I'm always aware of who is around me. At work it's just me in
the kitchen 99.9999% of the time and so I will linger and
assemble next to the coffee maker. If I see someone else enter
or if I'm in a crowded convenience store/hotel lobby/breakfast
station, I would certainly grab and scoot over.
I agree many probably do it absentmindedly since they are going
to throw away the trash or such.
It's just being aware of your surroundings and respecting
other's time. Especially when it comes to coffee, many people
are waiting for their first cup. No way do I want to be the one
who is standing between them and their caffeine :P

I tend to be hyper-aware of other people being around, which is
why I don't like crowds. Too many moving points to keep track
of. If I'm assembling a drink, I'll get tense just knowing
someone's behind me, even if they don't seem impatient. So
there's not much someone else could do about that.
If it's a hot drink, I think you just have to use a little
patience, whether you are assembling or waiting. The cups and
sleeves they give never seem to really make it comfortable to
hold, especially cheap cups that conferences tend to use. And
having spilled hot water over my hand in just such a situation,
I am pretty eager to avoid that happening again...

I agree that, especially with hot drinks, it makes sense to move
when it can be done without spillage. I'm comfortable waiting a
bit or saying excuse me to get what I need and moving on. The
times I get aggravated are when someone takes a sip and stands
in place, pondering. Then, I'm definitely saying "Excuse me," or
reaching in with an accompanying comment. I rarely reach in,
because I don't like people in my personal space, but that
pushes me to it.
The two hotels this is worst at both have convenient spots to
move to with large trash cans. I know because I move to those
spots. These are also the two hotels that have the largest
percentage, in my estimation, of holiday travelers as opposed to
some other hotels that skew a little heavier to business
travelers. My charitable perspective is that people are in
"holiday mode" and not rushing. (The one hotel has a high
percentage of international travelers and my husband and I have
become the designated "tip trainers" at breakfast -- but that's
another thread. :D )

I always try to move the one side. But if it’s not possible, I
try to make sure I go as quickly as possible and if people are
waiting behind me let them know I’ll be done in just a moment.
