who gets the money--me, or the kids?
By: TootsNYC Date: May 18, 2018, 7:03 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
My kids are flying somewhere w/ a connecting flight (they are 24
and 20, which I think is material). I'm paying for the flights
since they are coming to visit my father (I flew out earlier).
They have a 4-hour layover in the connecting city, so I told
them that if their flight is overbooked, they should volunteer
to take the bonus that the airline is handing out (I took a
similar flight and they were offering $800 for people to bump).
I think they got on their plane already, so it's totally moot.
But I thought we could discuss:
Who would get that $800--me, who paid for the flight? Or them,
who are giving up the seat on the plane, and whose time it
       actually is?
Does it make a difference if the time they give up isn't arrival
time, and is only that they're sitting in a different airport?

Them. They are the ones opting to add uncertainty into their
       travel schedule.

That’s a good question, and a tough one.
I suppose I’m kind of dodging the question, and it won’t apply
in other situations, but an idea that occurs to me is to put the
hypothetical $800 aside to be used for future family travel for
them that they might otherwise have had to pay for themselves.
I hope that this family trip is for a happy reason and that you
       all have a good visit.

What's funny is that it feels like my travel schedule--I came up
with the trip, I booked the flights, I suggested they volunteer
to be bumped. Sometimes they just feel like live cargo. ;)
It's such a weird time--they aren't really grownups, but they
       are.

       I thought about splitting it.

Thanks! Dad's getting older, so every trip is a "while he's
still with us" trip, but he's healthy and in good shape.

Have you already paid for the tickets? Maybe you can use the
money to pay whatever card you charged them to, so the flights
       are essentially free.

Wow that is tricky. You and your kids both have strong claims to
the vouchers. I guess I would let the kids have them because
they are compensation for their time and inconvenience.
Since you're arranging and paying for these trips, I think you
could say, "Hold on to those vouchers, it would be nice to visit
Grandpa at Thanksgiving/Christmas/sometime and we could use them
       then."
But if paying for these trips isn't a problem and you can afford
to let these vouchers go, it would be awesome to let your kids
do what they want with them! I would have loved a free plane
ticket at that age and appreciated you for not taking it away
from me. I know handling bills, money, stress, etc. is part of
growing up but so is handling bonuses and windfalls. Travel,
adventures and exploring shape us in adulthood as well.

       Definitely them.
They are the ones who have to sit around in an airport for hours
       with nothing to do.

The airlines don’t generally give you cash. I have only ever
       gotten travel vouchers.

I am curious, because I have never been able to do this---are
the vouchers/cash whatever given in the names of the travelers?
       Or are they transferable?

IIRC (it's been a while since I had one) they come with the
passenger's name on them and also a code that you use to buy a
       ticket online later.

If I were the kid, I would go into it assuming any voucher or
bonus was my mom's, because she paid for the initial ticket. I
would be sure to offer it to her, and then it would be 50/50 if
she took it or told me to keep it and use it for what I wanted.
Her decision would be based on a lot of things, like... budgets
and whatever. (I play the part of the kid well. The mom, not so
       much.)
