Crafty ways to help bushfire victims
By: Oz Diva Date: January 6, 2020, 4:24 pm

I know many people have heard about our Aussie Bushfire and
probably feel powerless, but might want to help. Additionally
many of you wonderful Brimstoners are crafty.
WIRES helps care for injured wildlife which is as you would
expect a long and arduous process. They are in need of sewn
pouches for their patients.

If you could help I am sure they would appreciate it. The
animals are being care for by a small army of volunteers who
selflessly donate their time. I have a friend who has cared for
tiny gliders for years and it is a full time job.
Thank you in advance if you can help, but no pressure of course.

Thank you OzDiva for bringing this up! What a crafty and helpful
way to offer aid!
I'm not a knitter, but if there are other opportunities out
there (rather than just donating to a fund) I would appreciate
hearing about them.

Firing up the knitting needles! What a great way to help.

I'm not firing up the needles, but noticed the "donate now"
button, so I've done a bit to help, and it's helped me finally
stop [some of] the mulling over how to 'pay it forward' that
LadyB suggested in lieu of us paying to help her host this site.
Thanks for starting this thread, Oz Diva; I'm sort-of happy and
sad at the same time [sad it's needed, happy at those wonderful
people helping].

Apart from knitting or money, I can’t think of anything right
now to help. Money seems callous but is desperately needed by
these little charities. It is a long term commitment. They will
need gallons of formula for babies (because of course you can’t
feed them cows milk), dressings, pouches, food for older animals
(much of which has been burnt), volunteer managers, gas, and I’m
sure many other things besides. All of which costs money. They
usually get no help from the government which will have other
priorities right now.

Those that don't knit but can sew I'm hoping this link works (if
not just go on Facebook and search for Animal Rescue Craft
Guild). Pictures and patterns are available on the page.

The joey pouches have set up in my brain, and whilst there is
no.spare.money to go and buy 100% wool yarn to knit, I'm mulling
over whether 'retired hurt' old cotton sheets could be used for
the linings [not the bit that ripped in the middle,
obviously]...
So my next question is: having watched Border Patrol in the past
on TV, I have an idea that anything we outside Australia send
through the post that is made of natural materials [so wool and
cotton] has to be [some kind of] radiation treated before it can
be released by customs to the recipient...
Would we foreigners be incurring costs to the charity/ies if we
send goods from overseas?

Good question and I have no idea. I shall try to find out. On
reflection I don’t think so, my MIL used to send my kids clothes
from Scotland with no issue. I think cotton products from
America or Britain should be fine.
Great idea to repurpose old sheets.

That's (sometimes) what a night of tossing-and-turning can come
up with: more sheets! ;) ;D
