I'd say: it depends. For example, is there a particular reason
why you or your friend need to catch the earlier flight? Would
waiting behind greatly inconvenience one of you? What's the
airport / surrounding region like - is there plenty for a lone
traveler to do for 5 hours by themselves, or would they be
uncomfortable or possibly even unsafe (for example, if they were
a young female traveler)? Are you slightly sick of your travel
companion and would welcome some alone time?! Etc etc.

Thanks for the perspective everyone - I was very tired and
trying not to have a knee-jerk negative reaction that wouldn’t
be fair to the person I was traveling with, Sara. We got in
from a cruise in the morning and since our planned flight was
later in the evening and we didn’t like the tour options, we
planned to check or store our bags and then go catch a movie and
get lunch in the city. Instead, Sara brought up the idea of
going on the standby list.
We waited a few hours to find out, but it was obvious to me that
while there were definitely enough seats for her to make it on,
my name was too low ranked. But she kept saying that her
brother the flight attendant said we’d definitely get it (I
think Bro meant Sara would get it) and brushed it off when I
would bring up what we should do if we don’t make it on. Then
her name gets called in the last 5 minutes of boarding and she
just runs up and on to the plane without even saying good bye or
asking if I’ll be ok for another 5 hours. This terminal by the
way, was packed and had no shopping, no lounges - just seats if
you were lucky and a place to get food/coffee.
At this point I was pretty upset and felt a little bit like
crying. I’m very independent and travel solo even
internationally, but this was a girls’ trip for us two and I was
feeling hurt at being left behind like it was nothing. Then she
started texting me from the plane saying she can’t just leave
without me and she just “knows” they’ll call my name too - but
they’d already announced there would be no more standbys after
her name was called and the gate was closed. Her last text was
that she feels terrible I didn’t make it on the plane which at
the time I was upset enough that it felt fake because how could
she not know that was going to happen under the circumstances?
Like I said, I was upset, but I read some of the initial
responses here on the forum while I sat there trying to decide
what to do which brought me back to a more reasonable frame of
mind. I don’t think I would have taken to flight unless I had
an urgent reason to get back early, but it was 5 hours earlier
so fair enough that she did. I took an Uber out and while I no
longer had time to watch the Star Wars movie or Jumanji, I was
able to catch Frozen 2, grab some food and then head back to the
airport for my original flight. Thanks for giving me
perspective!!

Well, honestly, I think the way she handled it was pretty rude,
and I can see why you're upset. I would be too. She never even
acknowledged that she was leaving you behind until after it was
too late.
While maybe taking the early flight wasn't rude, leaving you
behind the way she did was, in my opinion.

I agree. It wasn't what she did. It was the way she did it!

Agreed. Taking the standby option? Not rude. Up and leaving
without a word? Rude.
I am glad you salvaged the afternoon!

I think her actions were rude because you guys had made plans
for how you would spend the day. In your shoes, once you saw how
low on the list you were, I would have told her that you didn't
want to wait around in the airport for 6 hours and would go
ahead and head into the city for lunch and a browse around.

When (if?) She seeks forgiveness, I wouldn't be too quick to
oblige. I would ask how she would have felt if the
circumstances were reversed.
It says a lot of good things about you that you were able to
turn yourself atound and enjoy your time

To be honest, I think she was wrong on both counts. In a
situation like this, there was plenty of time to discuss what
might happen if one makes it and the other doesn't. I cannot
imagine traveling with a companion and one of us leave the other
behind on a stand by, unless both parties agree to it in
advance. And even then, I'd say that there would need to be
extenuating circumstances to compel this agreement.
I assume both of you had individual transportation from the
arrival airport to home? Because that's another thing to take
into consideration.
I'd think twice about traveling with this person again unless
your trip otherwise went well enough to overlook this. I think
what she did was pretty shitty.

Wow - that was an absolutely selfish thing to do to you. I'm
insulted for you. I'd have to say something to her about it
if/when she calls to apologize. Stunning lack of class.

I agree with this 100%.
