Would you take the seat and leave your travel companion behind?
       Update #11, more info #23

I’m waiting for a 6:40 pm flight and on the standby for a 1:20
pm flight with a friend I’ve been traveling with for a week. One
of us is going to make the cut off and get on the earlier flight
and the other will not (not enough seats). Should the one that
does take it and leave the other to wait?

If I were one of the two of you, I would almost certainly like
either having a block of time to myself (as the one left behind)
       or getting home sooner.

Depends on the companion. One person can be totally independent
and enjoy/don't mind alone time, while another person don't feel
comfortable traveling alone. If possible, that's something to
       discuss before vacationing with friends.

If there is any possibility of picking which one gets to go, I'd
insist that the other person take it. If they refused then I
would also pass it up and we would both miss out.

If there were some pressing reason that getting back early would
majorly help (say, I would be able to pick up my cat from the
boarding place before the daily cutoff and save the cost of one
day's boarding), I might consider it if my traveling companion
       was truly okay with it.
I mention cat boarding, because the last time my sister and I
traveled together, we made it back just in time to save the
       charge for another day's boarding.

I would choose to stay, but I wouldn't be offended if my
companion wanted to go on the earlier flight. There is enough
stress at an airport to get angry.

If my companion wants to get on the earlier flight, I'd wish
them a Merry Christmas and hail a cab to go do something fun for
       a few hours.

So much would depend on who the traveling companion was and the
purpose of the trip. But in general, I would think it would be
fine to take the earlier flight.

I was heading home for VorSon's graduation and his older sister
was flying with me. Due to accidents shutting down the
interstate (bad day to be traveling that day) and our being
stuck in an area with NO cell phone or data reception (we tried
to phone ahead) but with being detoured around the accidents and
way off the interstate....we got to the airport to find the
closer parking lots full & had to go to a different terminal,
through security (no chance to phone in there), and made it to
the gate in time for ONE of us to board. It took until midnight
to find another two seats together (last plane out) as there had
been a plane fail an inspection and every spare seat to that
airport (which happened to be a hub) was full of people being
rerouted through the hub to try to reach their destinations. We
stayed together...until we got on the plane and there was no way
to stay close due to our seats being whichever were the last two
available... I'm glad we did it that way...but next time, even
leaving an hour early was clearly NOT early enough just before
       the week of college graduation!

Unless either person really wants not to be alone on the last
leg, I think it's fine for one of them to take the earlier
flight. If they get to choose as to which of them gets the
earlier flight, if one of them needs it more than the other (as
       in pierrotlunaire's save-a-day's-cattery-charge), they could
       just toss for it.
