Thank you for those perspectives. I really never thought about
it that way. Maybe there is a problem with "Dr. Joe". I just
feel so uncomfortable that I haven't been back or said anything,
because I'm afraid it's going to backfire and they'll say "of
course there's no problem! We don't know what you're talking
about!" And then the next time it'll just happen again. This
has happened with some family members when I've tried to be
honest about a situation and just hit a wall of denial and
people telling me I'm crazy.

Oh yeah. You can tell a lot by how they react. The doctor whose
receptionist said that to me apologized profusely, investigated
it, and then called me back to let me know that he had talked to
her.
If they do come back with denial or dismissal, there's no
question that I'd never go back. And you might not want to go
back anyway. I just think that for me, the right thing to do
would be to let the doctor know, because there's no other way
for them to find this kind of thing out.

I was recently thinking about this very situation. I've been
going to a chiropractor that I really like for 5 years. Three
times in the last year or so I'd make an appointment, then when
I came in the receptionist told me "He's not in today. I left
you a message." Only there was no message on either my cell
phone or my land line answering machine. And I know they have
my correct numbers because they have called me in the past and
reached me. So it made me wonder, why are they lying about
this? Do they not want my business for some reason?? It's so
weird. I told the guy each time, I never got any message from
you and he just stared at me. It made me uncomfortable, so I
haven't gone back even though I really like the chiropractor. I
also haven't told the chiropractor since I don't know a nice way
to say 'I think your receptionist is a liar."
I would tell him! You don't have to say, "I think your
receptionist is a liar."
Instead, you just tell the story you've just told us.
Three times in the last year or so I'd make an

You can change the wording a bit if you want, but essentially,
just state the facts. Then let him know that because of this,
and this alone, you've chosen to see a different provider.
....
About 20 yrs ago, I got a new dentist on recommendations. I
liked him a lot.
One day, I called the dental office from work to verify that the
appointment was still on. They said yes. 45 minutes later I'm in
the dental office and the receptionist is telling me that she
made a mistake on the phone and I didn't have an appointment for
that day. As I start to insist (and to explain that coming to
the appointment is lost income for me), the dentist comes up and
I forget what he said, But he didn't fulfill the appointment.
Took me a few years to realize that the dentist had decided to
leave early. The receptionist only lied to me when she said she
had made a mistake. When she told me on the phone that the
appointment was still on, she was telling the truth. Some time
between that phone call and my arriving at the office, the
dentist decided to go leave. It would have been better if he
lied to me and said that he had had an emergency rather than
making his receptionist lie. Or he could have told me the truth:
"I decided to leave early."
Moral of the story: Sometimes business owners don't care about
losing your business.

Yes, if someone tells me they called and I know they didn't, I
tell them they didn't show up on my caller id AND they didn't
leave a message. I then ask them what number were you calling to
make sure they were calling the right number. I get tired of
people lying to me about calling and call them on it.
