Back when nobody had cell phones or caller ID, I got a message
on my answering machine for Mrs. Doe that Johnny & Susie had
doctor appointments the next day. I got out the phone book,
looked for that last name and a number similar to mine, and
called to relay the message and tell them about the mistake.
Now, I live in a fairly small town so it wasn't a lengthy
search, and there weren't any HIPAA laws then, so it was just a
courtesy that was easy to provide.
I agree that if someone says they've been trying to reach you,
they actually could have the wrong number or may have been
dialing incorrectly.

When it matters, I call them on it. Like the person who claimed
they had called my husband 'multiple' times and sent 'multiple'
letters. He had only received one phone call on his cell with a
call display that didn't match the business that claimed to have
called. Never called his home number - or at least never left a
message at the home number. And sent one letter - to the wrong
address. And it was couriered so they should have received it
back and knew they had a bad address. Did they bother to
confirm the address? Or the telephone number? Nope. Just
blamed my husband for slowing up proceedings because he never
responded to their communications. He set them straight on that
score. They just harrumphed and never apologized.

I would have asked them to verify that they had my correct phone
numbers because I hadn't received any calls. If the numbers are
correct I would ask if they left messages.
If you don't leave a message how am I supposed to call you back?

I would pretend to believe them, but verify:
"Oh, gosh! Can you tell me what phone numbers you have for me?
I have been getting calls and voicemails on both phones so
perhaps my phone number is written down wrong?"

One problem that I have when I am trying to call someone is
people often won't pick up when they see an unknown number on
their caller ID.
And I am one of those people. We don't understand why any
legitimate business that would be calling us doesn't have the
name of their company on there.
If they are legit, they leave a message.

I was recently thinking about this very situation. I've been
going to a chiropractor that I really like for 5 years. Three
times in the last year or so I'd make an appointment, then when
I came in the receptionist told me "He's not in today. I left
you a message." Only there was no message on either my cell
phone or my land line answering machine. And I know they have
my correct numbers because they have called me in the past and
reached me. So it made me wonder, why are they lying about
this? Do they not want my business for some reason?? It's so
weird. I told the guy each time, I never got any message from
you and he just stared at me. It made me uncomfortable, so I
haven't gone back even though I really like the chiropractor. I
also haven't told the chiropractor since I don't know a nice way
to say 'I think your receptionist is a liar."

Malfoyfan13 - I think another way to look at this is that your
chiropractor has some sort of personal problem that causes him
to just not show up to his office but office personnel don't
know when he isn't going to be in. So they are covering for
him. I think the fact that when you broached the subject with
him he just gave you a stare means that he knows what you are
referring to but isn't about to say anything to you about it.
This situation happened to me way back in history with my
primary doctor. He had a drinking problem. When I found out I
found another doctor.

Yes. This was my take on it too. I think it may be time to
go ahead and look for that new chiropractor.

I would tell him! You don't have to say, "I think your
receptionist is a liar."
Instead, you just tell the story you've just told us.
Three times in the last year or so I'd make an
appointment, then when I came in the receptionist told me "He's
not in today. I left you a message." Only there was no message

You can change the wording a bit if you want, but essentially,
just state the facts. Then let him know that because of this,
and this alone, you've chosen to see a different provider.
I had a negative experience once at a doctor, a long time ago. I
had called for an appointment and the receptionist picked up and
called me a bitch. I don't remember what exactly she said, but
it was clear that she thought I was someone else, not a patient
calling in. I think I just said, "What did you say?" and she
apologized, but wow! How unprofessional. I was certain the
doctor would want to know about that so I let him know.
Another completely unrelated incident, coincidentally, at that
same doctor. He had a very nice aquarium with exotic fish in his
waiting room. One time there was a dead fish floating at the
top. I mean, these things happen, I guess one of the fish had
died that day. But I told the receptionist and the doctor,
himself, came out and removed the fish.
If I had a business, any kind of business, I'd want to know if
something that might affect my business was amiss. Even if you
still choose not to return, I'd go ahead and let him know.
Took me a while to type that up as I got distracted with, you
know, work! And in the meantime, sandisadie posted. I never
thought of that!!! I think I'd probably give him the benefit of
the doubt anyway. If it really is something like that, that's
the way it is. But if it is incompetence on the part of the
receptionist, I'd think he'd want to know.

I went to a dentist who was on the plan my employer provided. He
started a root canal that should have taken three visits.
Unfortunately, I had an infection that was pretty stubborn and
caused a lot of pain. By the time he could complete the
procedure, it turned into ten visits. When it was finally over,
as I was leaving my last visit, I tried to make an appointment
for my next cleaning, but his receptionist told me I'd have to
find a new dentist because they were no longer accepting my
insurance.
As it turns out, he was on the plan for the next year when we
had open enrollment. That's when I found out they had lied to
me. They didn't want me as their patient any more, and I'm
pretty sure it was because he got a flat rate for the root
canal, with no adjustment for the seven extra visits. He was on
the list of available dentists on that plan as long as I worked
there. When they started offering a better plan, I went to my
dream dentist.
