Do you ever challenge callers when you're almost certain they're
        lying?
By: SnappyLT Date: December 6, 2019, 2:33 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Just interested in what others have done when they're almost
certain they're being lied to on the telephone.
Ordinarily, I just let it slide without saying anything (while
thinking to myself that the caller is probably not truthful and
maybe not to be trusted much).
The example from this morning that get me thinking of this was a
call from a medical assistant at the new medical practice where
I am a patient. (I started going to this new practice when my
previous doctor closed her office on very short notice in
February; the new doctor's office is the only other one very
close to my home that accepts my health insurance.)
After I picked up the phone and identified myself, the medical
assistant greeted me with the comment, "Mr. LT, you are a
difficult man to get hold of! I have been trying to call you for
       weeks!"
I think she was flat-out lying to me because she has both my
cell phone and my landline numbers - and the medical practice's
phone number has not been on my caller ID on either phone line
since the one time she called me in early October. If she truly
had been trying to reach me for weeks there would have been
multiple calls on my caller ID.
I didn't challenge her lie because I could see nothing to be
       gained by challenging her.
Her message today was a repeat of what she said in early October
and I replied politely with the same reply I gave her back then.
No problem, then, and not a big deal.
It does leave me wondering if people at the new practice are
       truthful about other matters, though.
I'm not asking for advice, but I am curious to know how others
handle it when someone lies to you on the phone.

I handle it much the same as you do. If it would make a
difference, I would mention it. But it usually will make no
       difference at all.
I do make a mental note about the person/business because I
consider them less trustworthy. It will sometimes contribute to
a decision to cut ties, respond negatively to a request, or stop
       patronizing a business.
I figure if people are untruthful when it doesn't matter, then
how are they going to be when it does?

I somewhat agree with the first answer; but, I would most likely
lightly challenge the caller by saying something like "oh, I
haven't gotten any messages from you on my phone, did you leave
me one?" Sometimes it's fun to hear them sputter as they try
to put together an answer to that! But I agree that from then
on I would remember this little lie and continue to wonder about
other things connected with this business.

This. I most likely would not say anything, but my opinion of
this company/service/person would be forever diminished. I'd
never really feel that I could fully trust them.

The car repair guy had our motor home in for an estimate. We
finally called after 3 weeks and were told they had tried to
call several times. When we arrived at the shop later, we
checked the number he had on the computer. It was correct.
Because they had lied to us, we found a smaller shop who did all
the same work in two days for a bit less. It runs fine so far it
is fine. So, I guess we called him on the lies and told him why,
       nicely.

This type of situation comes up at work occasionally. Depending
on how angry the caller is, I might push back gently. Something
along the lines of "I'm sorry. I didn't see a call come up from
you on my caller ID. Did you leave me a message with a phone
number to contact you?" I'm lucky because our office telephone
records cannot be deleted or altered. I have something to back
       me up.
My favorite time was when I was called into a superior's office
because Mr. So&So had been trying to reach me for an entire
month. I gave a very honest confused look and told Mr So&So and
my supervisor that that was strange because Mr. So&So's case had
       just originated a week before.
One problem that I have when I am trying to call someone is
people often won't pick up when they see an unknown number on
       their caller ID.

And I am one of those people. We don't understand why any
legitimate business that would be calling us doesn't have the
name of their company on there.

On land line caller ID, the name of the company usually shows.
On every cell phone I've had, caller ID only shows names to go
with numbers I've stored in my phone. When I don't know the
number, even though it may be perfectly legitimate, I don't
answer. The only time I'll answer the phone to a number I don't
know is if I am expecting a call.

We always answer a local call because it might be our doctor or
someone else that has privacy concerns. We also know when we are
expecting a return call from the plumber, electrician, repair
       shop, etc.

Just curious. Do you have voicemail? I do like a lot of others.
If I don't recognize a number, I don't answer. If it is someone
who has real business or a relationship with me, they leave a
       voicemail.
