This thread is not what I was expecting after reading the title.
It immediately brought to mind an old school friend whose first
act upon waking was a very loud blowing of her nose (experienced
first hand several times when we had sleepovers).
;D ;D ;D ;D

And also HOWEVER, I have had cars that will set off the car
alarm if you try to open them with the key, having not "beeped"
the car to turn off the car alarm.
My car is that way. If I tried to unlock it with the key, the
whole thing starts screaming at me. The beep is a lot more
tolerable.

would be a great name for a newspaper.

The chirp that some vehicles make when being unlocked with the
remote isn't as loud or as long as a horn and it's endemic to
unlocking some vehicles. There's probably a way to keep them
from doing that, but you'd have to figure it out and go to the
effort of undoing it or forgo the convenience of the remote,
which is something that most people have nowadays. If it's
something that's part of everyday life in the city, it seems a
little precious to complain about it. My neighbor sometimes
rides his Harley to work in the morning, and I wish it were
quieter, but to me, that's just part of life in the city when he
starts it up. If he sat there and revved the throttle for 10
minutes, I'd have a word with him, because it's unnecessary.
That's the thing about the horn honking - with cell phones now
commonplace, and the carpool arriving at around the same time
every morning, honking is not necessary.
Part of life in the city does not, it turns out, include my
neighbor taking his pet pig, Tocina, out in the early morning
for a constitutional. She would squeal like a pig ;D when he
tried to get her to come back in. Now he takes her out in the
evening. Someone (rightfully) complained. She was probably
waking everyone up.

also, a short honk is different from a repeated one, etc.

If you look to laws as indicator of neighborhood norms, then
quiet hours normally end at 7am. If you can't run a mower, you
shouldn't be honking for anything but danger.
In my city quiet hours are between 10pm and 6am. My snow removal
people have a check box 'Can we come before 6am. Please check
with your neighbors.' I always check NO without checking with my
neighbors. Even so, when I get up at 5:30am I hear neighbors
running their snow blowers, cleaning off their driveways so that
they can get to work.
So it depends on your area as to when the noise (beeping) is
reportable or not.

Honking to get someone to come out of their house is rude at any
hour. In the era of cell phones it is easier to send a text or
call when you are either nearing the house or outside.
I'm always reminded of a date that came to pick me up one time
and honked his horn to get me to come out. My father told me to
stay where I was. The boy came to the door and was greeted by
my dad who stated "The next time you honk your horn for my
daughter will be the last date you have with her".
He was a one and done because he said my dad was too strict. ::)
LOL! As far as honking etiquette? Oh.So.Much the bold above! Do
Not honk for my daughters when you're picking them up for a
date.

I am rather surprised by the consensus on this one. I figured I
was going to hear a lot of "This is so dumb to get worked up
about. You should anticipate certain noises when living near
others."
Whenever someone uses that line, I point out that "you should be
considerate and aware of your impact when living near others."
And tell them to go get a house out in the country, with no
neighbours, if they want to just make as much noise as they
want, whenever they want. (Because the person impacted is almost
always told to move to the country if they don't want to hear
noise).

It's funny that this has morphed into remote locks, as I have
considered that myself. I can lock my car remotely with a single
press and the lights blink. If I press it twice, it also honks.
I like to press it twice as I KNOW that it is totally locked.
But I have decided that I will not do this in consideration of
the neighbors. I arrive home most night weeknights after 10pm
and most of neighbors appear to be either sleeping or in quiet
mode (less lights on.) I know that they already think that the
hours that I keep are strange, so I definitely don't want to
pull more attention to my "weirdness".
I do sometimes find that unlocking noise to be annoying, but
agree that the alarm going off is MUUUUCH more annoying. I
assume that it's part of having neighbors.
It seems that my take away from this thread will be if I can
avoid a noise that I should. However, I will give my neighbors
the benefit of the doubt and assume that they are doing the same
so any noises that I hear are necessary.

My remote also locks with one press, and beeps with two. I just
remain within hearing distance to hear it lock, but most of the
time I just use the lock button on the door when I open it. When
I unlock my Honda, there is no beep, and there wasn't one on the
2005 Honda I had before it. That would drive me crazy!

Neither my 2009 or DH's 2018 Ford beeps when I press the lock
button on the key fob once. The lights (except for headlights)
blink. They do honk on the second press of the button.
If your horn does honk on the first press of the button when you
lock it remotely and you'd like to change that, check the
owner's manual or search online for directions to reprogram the
key fob. It is possible on some makes/models, but not all.
Edited because my phone sucks.
