       Returning candy after Halloween
By: RubyCat Date: November 6, 2019, 3:20 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I was talking to a friend the day after Halloween who said that
she'd bought a big bag of Halloween candy but her plans changed
and she couldn't be home to give it out. She said she was going
to bring it back to the store for a refund. This struck me as
odd. My dh, while he wouldn't return the candy, couldn't think
of a reason why friend should not. DH would've just eaten the
candy over the next few [s]weeks[/s] days. I would've brought
it to work (they'll eat any and all candy that's left out).
It's my thinking that if it were a regular bag of candy that the
store could sell again at full price it might be okay to return
but to return candy in Halloween theme wrappers is questionable
because you held on to it until after the holiday. What do you
       think? Am I missing something?

Lots of stores won't take Halloween-specific candy back because
they won't be able to sell them at full price.
I think that this is Commerce, not Etiquette, and if the store
wants to take it back, that's up to them.
If the merchandise is resellable, I don't think there's anything
wrong with wanting to turn it back into money.

For me it would just not be worth the time and effort to return
the candy. I would (as others suggested) just bring it to work.

I personally do not return food items unless the items have gone
bad or there is a problem with it. But if the company is willing
to take it back, then I guess it is ok. I agree that if it is
"halloween" style, I wouldn't even consider it.
I mentioned in another thread about Trader Joe's liberal return
policy. In that case, I think it is fine to try something out
and return if you don't like it since they encourage trying out
       their private label food.

Not everybody works. We buy only treats that we like and plan on
leftovers, so we would eat is later. I can not imagine trying to
return a seasonal product. Unless she has the receipt, she will
only get 1/2 price anyway, but I doubt even that.

I guess they can try and see what happens.
All the stores around me are selling Halloween candy at 70% off
now so I guess it depends on the store and if they're willing to
take a loss. I just bring leftovers to work too.

There are usually places to donate extra candy after Halloween.
My kids' dentist does a "buyback" and gives the candy to a group
that puts together care packages for the military.
I don't think I've ever tried to return food unless it was moldy
       or otherwise bad.

When I have returned food items I am always told without a
receipt the refund will be the lowest price in the last 6 weeks.
Seasonal food I would not try to return after the Holiday.

It's really up to the store whether they will take back
fun-sized treats after Halloween. If I were the store's
decision-maker, I wouldn't. That would just leave it open to
people over-buying just in case, and bringing back whatever they
don't use. I know from working in retail that customers feel
entitled to return anything, any time they like, but the reality
is that the store only has to take it back if it's defective.

I never think to return edible products, but someone corrected
me in another thread that it is something done; at least at
certain stores. If the store will accept the return, then I see
nothing wrong with it. However, the store would certainly be
within their rights to not accept the return or only refund a
       discounted price.
I only buy Halloween candy that I enjoy. Then when I don't hand
it all out, I get excited! ;D
