I had this happen to me once, but it was a cashier. I was buying
a bag of pecans in the brand that I favored, and she kept
telling me I should go back and get the other brand that was on
sale, and she would hold the line while I did it. I just kept
saying, no, thank you, until she gave in and checked out the
rest of my stuff. I avoided her line after that because I felt
awkward and embarrassed about our interaction. A couple months
after that she retired (I overheard her talking to someone else
about it), so maybe she was depressed and/or exhausted and her
brain to mouth filter hadn't been working so well on the day of
the pecans.

I don't understand why people don't take the free one either.
Maybe they can give it away or something. I may mention it once
in case they missed the sign, but I don't harp on it after that.
It doesn't affect me. But some people can't stand to waste money
even if the money is other people's.

Some stores' BOGO offers will take half price off of one item.

I wish all stores do that. In my experience, there's sales like
"2 for $10" which rings up $5 if you only buy one. But BOGO is
you buy the first for full price and that's it. Take the free
one or don't, but there's no adjustment. It's all about how it's
worded. I've never seen BOGO that give discounts. So silly and
annoying.

It depends on whether I have an obvious, easy person to give it
away to. If not, it's an example of not taking something that I
know will go to waste, just because it's free, the same way I
don't enter prize drawings for things I don't want. Easy and
obvious includes "that sounds like something Jane would like" or
"I think Murgatroyd said they use a lot of this," but not "there
must be someone on this block who likes these" or "I'll hang
onto it until I see my aunt, and hope I remember to put it in my
suitcase."
I buy most of my spices at Penzey's, which frequently has offers
like "try our Martian Road spice blend free with any $5
purchase." I will take a free sample of anything I think I might
use, and have been very happy with some of them, but I'm
unlikely to take a jar of a blend I already know I don't like,
even if it's free. S
Yes, if someone told me a thing was BOGO, and when I said "but I
only need one" they asked me to get it for them or the food
bank, or their brother-in-law, I'd probably tell them to grab it
from the shelf. But I'm not assuming they want to get out of the
checkout line and walk back to aisle 7 either.

Our neighbor recommended someone to cut trees down on our
property and we went with someone else. Neighbor has done
nothing with DH but glare since 2 years ago. He is nice with me
and of course his wife gets along with everyone.
Most of our lives, we have made it our habit to never recommend
anything because if it goes wrong it’s our fault in some
people’s minds.

Something like this is what I usually go with. "Oh thanks for
the warning. I'm going to try it but I'll stick with one for
now in case I hate it too!" I'm someone who can get pretty
chatty with people in the grocery store, though, so I don't
mind. Ignoring is fine too!

I just had something happen that reminded me of this thread. To
the general process, I'm of the belief that people have a
certain number of words to use in a day and perhaps they haven't
used them all up and are looking to engage with me. I'll,
typically, go along and chat a bit. Usually if I have capacity
(to include time and emotional resources) and the person seems
earnest. I might have told this woman why we were trying it and
then, if I found her too pushy, used a progressive response that
goes from "thanks for letting me know" to "I hope you find
something suitable" to "Okay now, must run!"
This week a colleague and I had a meeting in North Melobourne,
we parked on the street and were trying to get the metered
parking squared away. An older man heard our American accents
and stopped to see if we needed help using the machine. (I
didn't bother telling him that she's a permanent resident, it
was just a new to her machine.) I chatted with him while she
used the machine. He went on to tell me about the parking
problems the resident of his building are having, she finished
and also listened. We were early for the meeting and this took
2-3 minutes beyond setting up the metered parking. No biggie and
he seemed to need a little connection.
But.... we were at the wrong government building and had to
hurry to the correct one! It was an 8 minute walk and I had to
do a little jog in my heels to keep up with her because I have
short legs. I was starting to regret that chat. Then, we got to
the meeting and a principal person we were meant to meet with
wasn't ready until 15 minutes after the hour. So, once, again I
was glad we engaged with the sweet gentleman.
I'm not saying we always have to indulge others, I'm just saying
I do it once in a while.
