       Do I tip?
By: Mara Jade Date: October 8, 2019, 2:19 pm

I am transferring to a new role that doesn't require much travel
(Yay!), but I have one more trip to train my replacement.
I'm supposed to park at work and take a shuttle to the airport
to save on travel expenses. The van has my company logo on it,
but I don't know if the drivers are considered employees of my
company or if they are contracted. I've seen them in the
building a few times, but I don't believe they have employee
badges, my best guess is they are contractors. They are always
the same two drivers, John in the morning and Bob at night.
John and Bob are great. They help me with luggage, we've chatted
about our lives, they make sure I'm picked up and dropped off
safely. Because they help with luggage, I've tipped in the past.
My shoulder acts up and it really helps, and I thought you were
supposed to tip a buck a bag.
John says thank you and tells me it isn't necessary, but takes
the tip. However, Bob insisted I shouldn't tip the last time I
tried. We're friends, it's not necessary, he's doing his job,
etc. The last time I traveled I didn't tip either.
Should I continue to tip John and not Bob? Should I not tip
either because they are more like coworkers? Either way feels
       uncomfortable, for what it's worth.

I'd tell them it's on the company (if true). Otherwise, I think
the best thing is to take them at their word.

Can you check with company policies? Maybe HR or check with your
manager? . . . without mentioning names. Taking tips might be
against company policies and you don't want to get either of
them in any sort of trouble.
Or do you have an anonymous ethics line? That might be useful in
       this situation.

What an interesting scenario! My initial reaction is no, you
don't tip as they are hired or contracted by your company to
perform a job and I would assume my company set a fair wage.
But then I could also see where a company instead contracts out
to a 3rd party to provide shuttle drivers and then they really
aren't co-workers (employees or contractors) so maybe a tip is
       expected.
The only thing I can think of similar in my experience is the
staff that works in our very large cafeteria. Though they are
not direct employees of our company, there is never any
expectation of tipping them though they have the same job as
you'd find employees at other cafeterias where tips are custom.*
I agree about asking someone in your company. Do ya'll have a
travel group? Or maybe another co-worker might have some
       insights?
       :o

Bring them cookies? Or something like that? Just to show
friendly appreciation for the job they do, that won't cause any
       problems with company policy.

We have shuttles and the drivers are paid employees of the
company. I don't tip because it would be like tipping a
       coworker.

How about a gift card? You could offer it while saying something
about not traveling so much in the future, and wanting to thank
them for all their kindness when you were traveling. Also, if
you repeatedly offer the tip (3 times was the number in the
instance I'm aware of), they may be allowed to accept it. ;)

I like the idea of a thank you card or something of that sort,
       thanks everyone!
There is a travel team with a long section on tipping, but it
uses words like "customary" and "typical". My company uses a lot
of contractors, but they are functionally treated as full
employees, so I'm not sure if getting clarification on whether
the shuttle drivers are company employees or not would help
       much.

I'd probably be inclined to either do nothing or to give them a
gift once a year. Maybe a gift card to someplace very general
and useful like a grocery chain or amazon, so it functions like
a tip from customer to server but feels like a gift from a
       coworker.
