Need some quick help re: pet sitting

My husband and I are going on a cruise next week. We have asked
a young man next door if he will check in on our animals (two
cats) every day. They will be on feeders but I just want to make
sure they are well, food hasn't been turned over, etc. In
addition, he will pick up the mail as he passes the mailbox and
bring it in. He has an emergency contact number of our son, if
needed.
My question is, what would you pay for this? I'm thinking
$10-$15 a day? My husband has used him to help around our home
and pays him $10/hr.
Thanks.

I think $15 a day sounds reasonable, if it is only one visit a
day that would take him less than an hour. The extra $5 is for
bringing in the mail and the extra responsibility he doesn't
have when helping out your husband.

I pay a professional about $18 (CAN) per day, so $10-15 sounds
like a good range.

For the level effort required, $15 a day is perfectly
appropriate. We had a neighbor kid come by each morning and feed
our two guinea pigs while we were on vacation and that's what we
paid him.

Yep, I think $15 is perfect.
I pay $20 a visit to an insured, bonded pet sitter for 3 cats.
They are supposed to stay 30 minutes, play, feed them and clean
litter boxes along with water plants, get mail, etc.
Although now I am looking for someone else because my cats
apparently don't like the new guy. He tells me they don't even
come out most of the time and that is bizarre. Two of them
normally love every person that walks in the door.

Listen to the cats. They're pretty intuitive. ;)

I have pet sat many times, and that is a good amount to pay.
Especially if the person does not need to drive to your place.
One thing to consider is whether you would be open for him to
actually hang out at your house while you are gone. Maybe not
overnight, but an invitation to watch tv and some snacks left
for him would give your cats some extra time. It was not
something that I ever did without a specific invitation
completely initiated by the owner. One cat would watch a movie
with me each evening, all snuggled up on the couch. :)

You don't mention cleaning the litter box. If they're
indoor/outdoor cats (as our previous cat was) that may not be an
issue, but with our current cats, who are indoors only
(actually, our bedroom only, by their choice), that's a really
high priority for me.
Enjoy your cruise!
