MIL lived in a retirement community that had a large population
of retired Ivy League professors. MIL was a teacher but was
willing to believe anything these ‘eminent scholars’ told her.
she was seriously worried about our vacations because someone
told her that our trips cost $1000 per person per day. That
meant our three week holiday would cost $42, 000. She knew we
were careful with money. How could she believe that we’d spend
almost the entire amount of our $50,000 mortgage on a vacation?
Maybe this board needs a thread about not quite innocent lies
your parents were told.

Resurrecting this because I just remembered one.
When I was about 5 or 6 I told my mother I wanted to be a
blonde. I don't remember why but I'm guessing it had something
to do with Barbie dolls.
Mom told me to go sit in the sun and I would eventually turn
blonde. Still a brunette.

She must have forgotten to add the vital detail that you needed
to wash your hair in urine first and sit in the sun to dry it.
No kidding: that is actually how women in Renaissance Venice
turned themselves from brunette to reddish gold. They wore
special hats with a wide flat brim but no crown, so they could
spread their hair out on the brim to catch the sun while keeping
their complexions pearly white.

Okay, that's just gross. Their hair might have looked pretty but
could anybody stand the stench?

I'm just impressed that anyone could produce enough urine to
actually wash their hair with it. Especially if you did the
wash, rinse, repeat thing!

Remember that all human waste produced indoors was collected in
pots. And they may have purchased it.

Well, of course they washed their hair after the stuff had had
the desired effect, just as we do today after using hair dye or
bleach, so it wouldn’t have smelt bad. And while they were out
baking it in the sun, not only would they be in the open air
getting a breeze of the lagoon, but the hat brim would have kept
the hair off them.

I once asked my dad why it was called Greenland and he told me
the ice was green. I believed him for an embarrassingly long
time.

This same question was posted in a FB group recently. Most of
the responses were so depressing, I quit reading. But one I
thought was funny was that the ice cream truck only plays music
when it is out of ice cream. Then several others said their
parents said the same thing.

I don’t include the idea of not going swimming until after an
hour eating because I think even medical people firmly believed
that. T

Not my Dad. He always said it was rubbish. He was a physician.
