Innocent Lies your Parents Told You.

This idea comes from a poll recently done at Atlas Obscura.
We’ve all experienced them in one form or another. It’s bad
luck to open an umbrella or wear rubber boots inside the house.
If you eat your bread crusts you’ll get curly hair. Sometimes
       these little fibs get creative.
I was a pretty good reader by the age of four. To keep me in
the ‘Santa Claus Loop’ I was told that the brand names on the
toys I received for Christmas were the names of the elves who
       made them.
Okay, I could pretend to believe in elves with names like Hasbro
or Mattel. However, I couldn’t quite believe in an elf named
Milton Bradley. The name sounded like a guy who wore a three
piece suit and carried a briefcase.
       What are your innocent lies?

I remember someone telling us that if we peed in the pool the
water behind us would turn green and then everyone would know.
My sister randomly started looking really intently behind her at
a point after this so it became pretty obvious she peed...

I had the usual stuff, like "you'll catch a cold if you don't
wear a hat" and "you have to wait at least 4 hours after eating
to go swimming or you'll die of stomach cramps".
My dad told me that when an ice cream truck backs up, the music
plays backward. Sounded reasonable to me at the time. Never got
a chance to check that out in real life but was the laughing
stock of my friends when I told them :-[
And I always desperately wanted to drink coffee as a kid. My
parents wouldn't let me have it and told me that I'd stop
growing if I drank it. Didn't stop me from sneaking it though
       :-X

I'm so glad to see this forum!
I wasn't allowed to read in the car...my mom thought it would
ruin my eyes. So when we drove from Philly to Pittsburgh every
year, my sister and I couldn't bring books or games to help the
7 hour car trip go by faster, and we ended up fighting the whole
       time.
I always wondered why my dad had a headache every time we went
       to Pittsburgh.

I was told that it would turn bright pink! I even think about
that to this day and I'm in my thirties.

Growing up we had a city pool (though you had to buy a
membership ::)) and it was usually 2 life guards and 40 plus
kids from ages 8 to 15 with a few parents there with their under
8 year olds, so things could get a little out of control. We
were all told the turn green for peeing. One day 3 brothers came
with green food coloring hidden in their swim trunks and
strategically got behind a few groups of girls and started
releasing the dye. Half the kids couldn't be convinced that it
wasn't urine causing it and wouldn't get back in the pool, the
other half thought it was hysterical. The 3 girls targeted got
back at them by getting peroxide put into in their shampoo
bottles. We are pretty sure the male lifeguard was their
assistant since the bottles were in the guys locker room.

My mother insisted we could not get a third cat because it was
against the law for a house to have more pets than humans. I
believed this for an appallingly long time.

My father for some odd reason told us that it was unhealthy to
eat fish and drink milk at the same meal. Never explained why.
Had nothing to do with kosher rules as far as I know, unless it
was so far back in the mists of time it was lost to history.
Our mom thought it was nonsense too, and she was the
disciplinarian, so we would make a point of drinking milk with
our fish if we were feeling naughty.

That was a pretty common old wives tale. In some cultures they
even thought it created some type of skin patches.

My mother always told us that burned toast would make us sing
       better.
It must have worked, because we all have great singing voices!
