Etiquette of the Bank Employee
By: LurkingGurl Date: August 9, 2019, 3:45 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I went to the bank today to deposit a check and was interested
in a credit card offer that they had.
The teller had me go to one of the little offices and meet with
this guy who I have met before... I think.
In any case, he didn't seem to know enough about the card to
answer my questions without going across the bank and asking
someone who was by the tellers.
But, I've got to tell you, the worst part was him chewing and
popping his gum with his mouth wide open while scratching...
something, I don't know what. But, it was below the desk. His
whole upper body was moving with the effort.
I can't fathom how someone would think that this kind of
behavior is professional. I was thinking to myself that I
needed to get out of there asap. And then I thought, am I being
too prudish?
But, it was just gross, all the way around. I mean, I didn't
come into his office chomping on gum and scratching at myself
and I wouldn't! Why was he?!!
Has anyone else noticed this kind of thing?

Nope, never. You're not too prudish.
I, too, would have been wondering about his professionalism and
thinking that maybe he didn't have my best interests in mind.
Curous -- did you end the meeting by signing up for the card?
Did he answer all of your questions?
I think I might call and talk to a manager about his actions.
But if you were otherwise satisfied with the new card/deal then
you might not have much to go on as far as customer complaints.
If you have other banking questions/concerns and they lead you
to Scratcher/Chewer, I think you should say "I would like to see
someone else, please."

I agree that it is not too prudish. I think we've become a
society that accepts turned around baseball hats worn at nice
restaurants, obnoxious bullies yelling profanity at kid's
sporting games, and professionals acting anything but
professional because we are too timid to say anything or
complain because we'll seem like prudes.
I'd be sending an email to the branch manager describing your
experience.

Honestly, I don't think it matters where you work or where you
are, ALL OF THAT is unprofessional and a big gross no!

In a place of business, this is a matter of poor management.
Sometimes new employees don't understand what behaviors or dress
are considered acceptable for that job. Sometimes they're just
young and clueless. It is up to the person above them to give
them the information they need. Because I had power of attorney
for two elderly parents, and was executor for two estates, I
spent a lot of time with those people in the little side offices
of banks. I've never had any bank employee chomp gum or scratch
away at their nether regions.
This is even worse than another poster mentioning that she saw a
waitress in a restaurant put her foot on a table so she could
tie the shoe. That made me wonder what the heck was going on
back in the kitchen.
Incompetent management.

Absolutely call to report this to his manager, or even higher up
the food chain. That's just gross.

As well as grossly inconsiderate. My late FIL, a lovely man, was
a branch bank manager; he would never eat garlic or onions, not
because he didn't like them but because, as he said, most people
find having to have a private conversation with their bank
manager quite enough of an ordeal in itself; they don't want him
smelling bad as well.

My sister has worked in banking her entire life. I was reading
her the OP, and she was appalled about the gum chewing even
before I got to the scratching.
She said that a call to the manager is called for, not just for
the unprofessional behavior but also for the fact that he didn't
seem to know much about the product (credit card). That is also
a major no-no. Almost every banking institution out there has
sales quotas for employees, and someone who can't answer
questions about the product can't sell it.

I work in a bank. The gum chewing is a big no no, at least when
working up close and personal with customers like that. (I work
drive-thru as a teller sometimes, and I will chew gum back there
because I'm not up close to the customers and I certainly don't
chew it with my mouth open at all.) The scratching thing is just
yucky - he definitely shouldn't have been doing that!
As for him having to go across the bank to get questions
answered, it sounds to me like that's a training issue or you
were sent to the wrong person. This has happened to me before.
It's usually the latter in my case, and in that instance, I
direct the customer to the correct person. I hate to put it like
this, but sometimes I get customers "dumped" on me in customer
service because there's no one available in the correct
department, which is incredibly frustrating to me and to the
customer because I don't have the knowledge to help them since
it's not something that's actually within the realm of my job
description and the teller who sent them to me couldn't be
bothered to tell them that unfortunately, all of the people in
the department they need were busy at the moment. There are a
lot of scenarios where that could have happened, so that may or
may not have been his fault.
I would definitely express your feelings to someone higher up
about the scratching thing, and maybe mention that if an
employee is going to chew gum, it needs to be done in a discreet
manner. Definitely mention the fact that he didn't seem to be
able to help much with credit cards, but perhaps frame it in a
way that says that he either needs more training because he was
willing to answer your questions, he just had to field them to
someone else to make sure the answers were correct, or that his
fellow employees need to be trained to send customers to the
correct department to begin with.
