I think expecting your volunteers to pay the entry fee for the
honor of helping is a terrible idea and should be quashed
forthwith.

Volunteers don't expect to get paid for their hard work. but
they shouldn't be expected to pay for the privilege of spending
time and energy doing the work of the charity either. I
personally would not continue to volunteer if I were required to
pay for the privilege of doing so.

Exactly, the charity is paying the caterer, so the Charity has
to take money away from their cause to pay for the food for the
volunteers. IMO, if you only help out in order to get
something for free, then it would be better for you to stay
home. At least you won't be costing the charity money.

I find it hard to believe that many people would spend a whole
day working hard at an event of a charity they are in any case
supporters of, just to get a free lunch. The issue is whether
people willingly giving up their time to work for the event
should have to pay to do so.
The charity should certainly ensure that it only enlists the
help of as many volunteers as the event needs, on the
understanding that they will all have real work to do pretty
much all day. In other words, they shouldn't allow - let alone
actively recruit - more people than they need, so that some of
them turn up and really have nothing to do. (Apart from anything
else, nothing alienates keen volunteers faster than giving up
their time because they've been begged to come and help, then
find they're superfluous.) That will cut down the catering
costs.
If the charity find that paying for the volunteer team to have
the party buffet alongside the paying participants still costs
too much, either order a cheaper picnic pack each for them, or
simply advise them to bring their own lunch. Mulcting them $20 a
head for a posh buffet that they don't even necessarily want
(who routinely spends that much on their lunch?) is not good.

There will absolutely be a profit for the charity built into the
ticket price, over and above what they're paying the caterer.
Ticket price is $25, caterer is charging $10 per meal. Or
something.
So if you pay full price as a volunteer, you're covering the
catering cost, plus you're providing that profit margin that's
built in.
But volunteers are making it even possible for the charity to
make any money at all.
If you don't pay anything, you're only costing the charity the
$10 or whatever.
And considering that you're also making it possible for the
caterer to make money as well, it seems like feeding the staff
would be something they'd roll into their costs, so that it was
all covered by the ticket price.

I do a fair amount of volunteer work. If it is a ticketed
event, I do not expect to pay to get into the event, as I will
not be able to participate in all activities, as I'll be
working. I do appreciate being fed, if my volunteer time is at
least three hours and is over a meal time but I don't expect to
eat Chez Fancy, if that is what is being served to the attendees
of the event. I'm good with pizza or sandwiches or whatever.
If I'm expected to provide my own meal, I would need to know if
there was easily accessible places to purchase food or if there
was a kitchenette where I could heat up my lunch or if I'm
required to go out and buy sandwich makings and other bagged
lunch items, as I don't generally keep them in the house.
I might rethink volunteering for an organization who treats
their volunteers like that, though. These people are helping
you out for free; the least you can do is feed them something.

Also looked back at the posting history, but if this is the same
charity, it is a charity honoring OP's late sister. She was
taken off the board and replaced with someone else! At this
point I wouldn't go. I would be done. No money no nothing. Don't
even go. And if they harp at you say "I choose to honor [late
sister] in my own way," as a poster on the other thread
mentioned.
