That would really make me not want to help out again. I wonder
if your family understands that this is a financial burden for
you? It's a good reminder to never just assume a "mere $20" is
ok for everyone.

If you wanted “proof” that your decision to back off on future
participation in this charity was a good one, there’s your sign.

Right, I love the people who say "It's only $XX.xx" but if you
say, "OK, YOU pay it for me" suddenly it is a big deal.

I've had shop assistants tell me they don't have 5p pieces, and
that I should be OK with that [being short-changed] "it's only
5p, isn't it?". I will explain that "if it's only 5p, the shop
should be out money, not me", and then suddenly it's not "only
5p". No-one gets to decide how much money another person should
be OK with being out.
I've had points in my life where finding £1 has been a
challenge, so $20 would be a huge drain on resources.
It can be worth saying "are you offering to pay for me then?" if
someone tells you it's "only $20" - it does tend to cut off that
conversation pretty quickly.
{{Hugs}}, because the way they are running your charity sucks
pretty badly - a great way of having no volunteers other than
favoured family members, in my opinion.

To me, $20 is a lot to pay for a picnic. So if I volunteered, I
would bring my own food.
I would also tell the board that we should pay for all volunteer
tickets or none...Why is so and so's DH special? because he is
male?

The picnic was yesterday. It went better than I had expected,
though the caterer did run out of drinks and a committee member
had to run out and get some. B ended up paying for my ticket as
a birthday present (my birthday is next Sunday). B also told me
that she is going to have a discussion with the Board regarding
volunteers paying for events they are volunteering at. Seems
she realized what I was trying to get at when she asked our
cousin to help out and felt weird telling her she'd have to pay
the entrance fee. (Cousin was there so either she agreed to pay
or B covered her as well) All in all, it was a pretty good day.
I am still considering backing away from the picnic at least as
far as being on the planning committee. I ended up missing half
of the meetings because they scheduled them on a night that I
could not attend. (Long standing commitment)

Yes, good idea.
I would be tempted to bring a dinner that was something really,
really tantalizingly delicious, too, including a fancy bakery
dessert.

...and then brag how the whole thing costs less than $20!!! ;D
(Not polite? Sorry, I'll try again!)

I vote pay nothing. They are donating their services. I've done
a lot of charity work and I have never been asked to pay for a
meal while I was working for free.

but she didn't feel weird telling YOU that you had to pay...
I'm not loving the way your sister regards you.
And paying for your entrance fee as a birthday present? Hmmm...

I wouldn’t volunteer for something like this. The charity isn’t
making money off the food, the caterer is. If they’re too cheap
to feed me while on active volunteer duty then will find a more
suitable charity to volunteer for.
