to me when I was gardening in the front yard. He could keep
going for a LONG time! I didn't go out into the yard without my
cell phone in my pocket, so that if I really needed to get away,
I could pull out the phone and say, "Sorry! Gotta answer this!"
as I headed back inside.

We live in a mobile (signal) black hole, but your post reminded
me of my 'cutting-short-telephone-calls' technique: we have a
plug in doorbell, and one of the units is behind the chair by
the telephone...
It has a button on top that you press to check it's working -
and also when a (landline) call has gone on too long.
"Ding-dong", "gotta go, that's my doorbell, bye!", job done! ;)
;D
On the rare occasions we do get a mobile signal, and I want to
end a call, all I have to do is move about 2" from having my
head pressed against the front window, and voila, no more mobile
call. :-\

Thanks for the responses everyone! I've been starting to feel l
like DH and I are the only ppl who aren't interested in these
interactions because all attempts to shift and shape than are
meet with subtext to suggest we're in the wrong. I do the keep
moving strategy when we walk with a wave of my hands and, "Gotta
stay in my zone!" That either goes over better or we're not
around to see the response. ;D
Once, two ppl were stopped in their cars, one going each way to
the only road to our house chatting. I really had to go to the
bathroom. I waited three minutes, waved my huge Wendy's cup out
the window and said, "I drank this whole thing on the way home!
I really have to go!!" They laughed and moved, but there was a
head shake to each other like " Some people are so impatient."
Honestly, I'm okay with those responses, especially when I'm so
clearly in the right. It's a work in progress for the other
situations. Striking a line between being "those ppl" and having
our boundaries trampled...

been immediately met with an icy glare of death. I am
super-sensitive about this kind of control tactic, so I'm not
the best one to offer any advice. I do send lots of moral
support though!

Yes! I would have done the same thing. I would have shouted
(to be heard over the sound of the mower) 'I have to finish this
before my allergies get too bad! Get out of the way or I'm
mowing your feet!'
