Rules of the Road - or what happened to common courtesy? Any
Bad Driver Stories?

I went to make a turn into a grocery store & gas station off a
six lane highway (someone behind me was also planning to turn,
based on their lights and them following me closely). So some
nitwit coming out of the gas station was sitting in the incoming
lane, trying to get out onto the highway just a little faster.
Right next to that nitwit, was nitwit #2, parallel to the first
car and ready to pull in right behind it - but both of them
blocking the incoming lane (curb & landscaping limited my
ability to go behind them to get in my lane on the other side of
their vehicles).
I limited myself to blasting my horn very loudly and for several
long bursts. I got the equivalent of a blank stare from the
driver that I could see and both tried to edge in behind the car
in the exit lane and the larger vehicle behind it (that they
were both trying to cut in front of).
The car behind me at least didn't honk at me for stopping in the
middle of the entrance with my trunk right in front of them as
they started to turn.
Other than honk at them and glare at them (I kept my mouth shut
and my mental observations to myself about the entitlement and
other caustic observations about them probably having flunked
driver's education) what can you do?

Everybody knows this one I think. People believe that if they
use their turn signals either their battery will go dead or
they'll have to use some of their gas to accomplish this - so
they don't use them! Anyway, those are the only explanations I
can come up with.

This happened to me both yesterday and today, in different
cities...
I was stopped at a red light, with a red right turn arrow, plus
a sign stating no right on red. I'm in the right lane waiting
for the arrow to turn green and the jerks behind me are laying
on the horn. Apparently, they can't effing read or know what
road signals mean. The guy yesterday pulled around me in the
right and proceeded with his turn on red and promptly was pulled
over. 😂😂😂
My other peeve is with this bicyclist I've had several near
misses with when leaving my office after work. She comes flying
around a blind turn on the sidewalk and fails to stop at the
stop sign. She had the nerve to yell at me for almost hitting
her and I told her it was her own damn fault for not stopping at
the stop sign. She tried to argue with me that she wasn't a
vehicle. I told her very firmly that she needed to look up the
laws regarding bicycle travel because you most certainly most
follow the same rules of the road as a motor vehicle, including
stopping at lights, signs, and driving on the correct side of
the road, which she was also not doing. I haven't seen her the
last few days...

For a while there seemed to be an epidemic of this where I live.
One car will stop at a red light. The driver behind him,
apparently believing the red light didn't apply to him, would
swerve around the first car and run the light. Who expects the
SECOND car in line to run the light? Got pretty scary for a
while, until police started cracking down on that.
There's also confusion with people who drive in both NYC and
neighboring NJ. NJ's rule is right on red anywhere unless
there's a sign prohibiting it. NYC's rule is NO right on red
anywhere unless a sign permits it. Makes for some interesting
interactions sometimes.

I may have mentioned that my older embroidery machine has been
in & out of the shop since May...I got a phone call from the
repair tech, no hoops of the correct type to test the machine,
could I bring one over (a bit of an irritation because I tried
to send one and it's a thirty minute drive from our house to the
repair shop - part of the time on a very busy interstate). He
needed to test it and promised that he'd finish it so that I
could bring it home, fixed.
I grabbed a hoop & left the house as soon as I could to get up
there just before three pm. Not too much traffic going in
either direction - just the normal level of "busy". No
memorably bad drivers...
Coming home in rush hour traffic (should have stayed in the area
and eaten dinner before driving home) wasn't too bad. Until I
got off the interstate to turn south on the state highway that
we live just east of. There were people weaving in & out of
traffic, changing lanes as they turned right (two right lanes,
they started out behind the car next to me & managed somehow to
cut in front of me and hit the gas to get up to the next red
light faster). And from the interstate south until about a mile
from my house, it was people stopping in the middle of the
intersection on a green light because the traffic ahead of them
had filled up the road but they weren't going to get caught at
that intersection if the light turned red, people turning from
the middle of three lanes at an almost 90 degree angle to cut
across another lane of traffic to get to the center turn lane so
that they could make a turn at the next light...forcing their
way into an opening less than one car length with five cars
between their vehicle - not that far from the intersection...or
turning when the green light came on for the vehicles going
straight but if they HURRIED enough, they could turn in front of
the oncoming traffic before it had a chance to get too far into
the intersection.
Excuse me - I need chocolate...my nerves are shattered.

This all reminds me of last week. Driving down a major
thoroughfare with three lanes each direction. I was in the
middle lane. Drivers come up on either side, then both proceed
to try to switch into my lane, fairly close in front of me!
Yikes! I don't like to drive in that lane, for that very reason,
but because of the way the right lane merges off to other roads,
and traffic merges in to that lane, it's better to travel the
middle lane for while. Then at a certain point, that right lane
goes off in another direction altogether and you wind up
downtown (as I did a couple of weeks ago, because I forgot just
which medical building I was supposed to be going to!)
Thankfully there was no accident that day. Wish me luck - I have
to travel that road tomorrow.

I have a slightly different story for you.
I was driving in a fairly rural part of the country and came
across a sign that said 'warning, cows ahead'.
Well. I slowed right down and kept on until eventually my car
was surrounded by a bunch of.... sheep.
All the sheep were perfectly polite, in case anyone was
wondering.

Bad driving stories, too numerous to count. Here there is a
daily traffic jam to cross a bridge, with two lanes merging into
one coming from the west, and two lanes merging into one coming
from the east, then the two newly merged lanes have to merge
into one. So basically four lanes merging into one (eight if you
look further back, where four lanes merge to two). Most
afternoons there is at least a half hour wait to drive over this
bridge. Everyone is so polite and orderly, it astonishes people
from other places. But really, everyone knows that it works best
when people zipper properly. The merge point is clear - you
zipper at the end.
But every so often, someone tries to use the through lane (the
one not going over the bridge) to drive up past the line and cut
in at the last second. There is a solid white line at that point
which means no lane changes. You can tell who is a lost tourist
vs a local who is being very deliberate about it. I had been
waiting half an hour when one of these guys tries to cut in. I
pulled up tight to the person in front of me and everyone's
windows were open, so I said to the driver, "The lineup starts
back there." He called me a rude word for female anatomy. Well
sorry, but you'd be indignant if someone just shoved their way
into the lineup at the grocery store, and you might mention
there's a lineup of people who have been waiting their turn, so
why is this kind of lineup any different?

Is that true??? I see a lot of people not using their turn
signals and it drives me nutso. if they really believe that
nonsense, then I can understand it somewhat. I just find it
hard to believe so many people are blissfully ignorant about
turn signals.

The biggest problem *I* see with the 'right on red' rule is that
TOO MANY people simply drive around the corner, without
signaling, without stopping. The right on red rule means that
you treat the red light as a STOP SIGN. STOP first, THEN turn.
Don't just drive around the corner, cutting off anyone who is
legitimately turning that corner on a green light.
