jpcher I always admire your grace.
I wonder if this director is confused about the logistics of
printing your PDFs. perhaps she and her admin don’t understand
that either of them could print it?
Aw, thanks, Hanna and others. LOVE YOU ALL! ;D
Other people mentioned printing logistics/programs and maybe
contacting IT. Nope, that's not the problem. The .pdf's that I
send out are low resolution proofs. As far as I know, everybody
has Acrobat Reader (lowest form of the program). Anybody that
can open the files has the software that can print them (cursor
up to the small printer icon and push the button) all the
printers are connected and working.
Runningstar -- This is exactly the reason why I posted, thinking
there was really nothing I could do about the situation.

If you had asked about this back then, I'd have said for you to
just print the paper and move on!! Get him satisfied and out!!
But now? I would actually let his admin. know that he cannot
print a pdf, and that you would be sending pdf's to them
(him/her?) for printing.
Aleko -- excellent post about the admin feeling frustrated. Read
on. ;)

Truth be told, from your's and other's responses, I need to say
that I am in no way direct- nor dotted-lined connected to BWD on
the Org Chart. BWD and her group are my customers. So printing
.pdfs for BWD is not in no way part of my job description.
I am still confused about the bolded. So BWD is not part of your
organization? Do YOU have an admin? It does seem weird that BWD
is asking someone who is not an admin to do administrative jobs,
but I wonder if she thinks you are best able to print a PDF you
created, especially if BWD is a customer instead of a colleague
within your organization. I would maybe ask your boss how he/she
wants you to handle requests from customers.
Jem -- lowspark is correct. This is an internal customer. It's a
bit difficult to explain without going into a whole lot of
history, so here's the short end: BWD and her group are the
communications department for my campus within a very large
world-wide corporation. I do a lot of work for them:
advertising, trade shows, employee comms, etc. My department
(graphic design) has dwindled down to only me. I am
straight-lined report to a Director who works out of state.
I hope that makes sense and clarifies things a bit. Like I said,
I do a lot of work for BWD's team, but they are not my only
internal customers. Anybody that works within my campus can come
to me with requests for posters, banners, fliers, etc.
No, sadly, I do not have an admin. Sigh. Plus my Director is out
on medical leave right now and I'm not really comfortable with
talking to her temporary replacement.
bopper -- Excellent point! ;D
(DD#2 just showed up, I've seen her more than I have when she
lived here! Gotta run.)
Thanks for all of your responses!

Thanks for the explanation, jpcher. So BWD has the ability to
print all on her own when she is in your general area? If yes, I
would remind her that she can print this all by herself. If not,
I am guessing she is thinking about how it is easiest for the
company to provide her with a PDF print when she is in the
location where she was when she asked you for it. I am still
unclear logistically where people and computers and printers
physically are. If BWD would need to go to a different area to
print, or her assistant would need to come from a different area
to hand a printout to BWD, I can understand why BWD would be
asking YOU, the one who is physically right there, to print. I
do think that better communication is important regardless.
“BWD, you can print to this printer right here from your phone!”
or “BWD, your assistant can print to this printer right here,
even from her desk in building A.”
If that is NOT the case, and BWD would need someone “local” to
print, I would determine that is the case and then either hit
print or direct BWD to how she can obtain a physical document
when she is physically in your area.

jpcher I’m not saying her printing doesn’t actually work, I’m
saying to be obtuse and behave as if that is the only possible
reason they’d be asking you to print for them.
And also, it’s still possible they do have an issue. Big global
IT isn’t always perfect no matter how hard we try. (Had an
issue this week where a coworker was complaining about a file
format but it turned out they had no default printer set and the
printer they were choosing had forced portrait printing.)

All of the off-topic messages on this thread have been moved to
The Suggestion Box.
I created a separate topic so that it could be discussed. You
will notice that all the messages will show having been edited
by me--that was only the title. Didn't know that it could
automatically change the title after the split because I haven't
tried that feature before. So, before anyone starts up rumors
that I edited anything that was actually said in those messages,
I want to make perfectly clear that I did not edit a single
word--only the title.
Anyone wishing to continue the conversation on the community
reaction to someone's obviously against the rules behavior, can
do so in that thread.

This thread can now return to its previously scheduled
programming. ;)

I've found that thinking "how far will this put me behind with
my own work?" and "will this create a precedent?" can help me
focus on 'pushing back' on things that will cause my work to get
behind.
'Pushing back' was a very helpful technique taught to me by a
previous boss [who was great, and then turned all
psycho-bunny-boiler :'(].
For instance: "I could print you that .pdf, but my work is manic
until Thursday - is that OK for you? Or perhaps you could get
your assistant to do it, if it's more urgent than that?". It's
a lot easier to push back at people nearer your own level. :-\
I have had success in the past with "have your boss ask my boss
if he [my boss] want me to do that [your work]", but that's no
use to you at the moment, jpcher. I only mention it because it
may help someone else in a similar position.

Sigh. Here it is after 11pm and Noisy Neighbor decided to have
Lalapalooza in her own back yard. Trying to decide if I should
call the non-emergency number or not . . . but I'm already
awake. Sort of.

printers physically are.
Gotcha, Jem -- BWD and her team are now residing directly in my
space so, logistically it's only a few steps away from where I
sit, Admin sits, BWD sits, to get to two printers in our area.
silversurfer -- you asked for UPDATE ;) which really isn't much
of an update, but I found this amusing:
I was talking to one of BWD's 'underlings' (a manager) who
mentioned, laughingly, something about him being reduced to
Admin status because he'll do other such stuff (Admin tasks) for
BWD as well.
I asked him why doesn't admin do this? He side-stepped a bit and
sort of said "She's basically worthless." which I've had
inklings about from others during the past few months.
So I told him about my last encounter with BWD and her sending
an email to OOS person. He was a bit confused and said that OOS
person has the capability to send files to our local printers.
He said "maybe she doesn't realize this." He was supportive of
me and agreed that I shouldn't have to do the admin tasks.
As far as being proactive about the situation? I haven't done
anything yet. BWD has been on PTO for most of this past week.
But I'm listening and reading all of your responses with great
interest. I know that, should this happen again, I'll have
ammunition and backbone enough to say something in a positive
way to BWD.
I do think that I'll buy Admin one of those lovely cookies that
they sell in the cafeteria, for an ice-breaker, want to get to
know you better type of thing. Thanks to all of your
suggestions. ;D
