Please stop asking me to babysit
DIR By: LadyRexall

I’ve helped neighbours out in s crunch before babysitting wise.
It’s summer now, schools out, they’re both working and have
mentioned babysitting several times. They even glommed onto the
idea that my teen daughter, who has a job, would do some
babysitting. What’s my go to line for “never ask me to babysit
again” but politely. Note: it doesn’t help that I’m a stay at
home mom so I’m home with my son anyhow. Second note: no amount
of money would make it worth it for me to babysit. I simply
dislike their child (no matter how uncharitable it is to say
that). Note 3: adding to my frustration: they didn’t try to find
full time child care. They tried to find “free” full time child
care and complained to me that there’s a lot of help for kids
with autism and other difficulties but no help for their son
with mild add.

Oooh that's frustrating. I think a rinse-and-repeat "I'm sorry,
I'm not available for babysitting this summer" (but why?!) "I'm
just not, it won't work out."
No explanations. (Would "I need to focus on my son this summer"
be too much of an explanation? I'm curious to see what others
suggest.)
Which is really hard to do, of course, and why I tend to wind up
suckered into agreeing to things.

Well someone must be taking care of their son at this point.
I think you just stick to, "I'm not available to baby sit.
You'll need to make other arrangements." If they persist, I
think a "Sorry, I really have too much going on and won't be
able to help." is the most I would say.

children. I hope you understand".

Dad wasn’t working, so he was child care, but just landed a
contract. He’s been looking and just found something starting
the next day. So there are in a real crunch now, not having
found options because dad was home anyhow.

Who cares if she understands? It doesn't matter. You don't
want to take care of her kid. Not your problem. Just say, "No,
I will definitely not be available to babysit your child and
neither will Teenage Daughter. You'll have to find other
arrangements."
Don't even think about using the word 'sorry'. You have
absolutely nothing to be sorry about!

You could address it head on when they mention it as people have
mentioned great wording and no way should you feel even a twinge
of guilt. Plenty of people find care for their kids just fine
without imposing on their neighbors. Just out of curiosity, how
are they getting a hold of you? Can you just remain out of
contact until the crunch period has passed?

We’re Canadian lol, so “sorry” is like every word for us. 2.
Were in a very small townhouse community of 10 neighbours and
the babysitter askers are right next door, connected to our
house. We see them all the time, so I would like to be as polite
as possible. 3. I have extreme anxiety and have always had
trouble saying no. It’s just me. It might not make sense to you
but this whole situation of having to say no causes extreme
anxiety. I bet that’s how I get suckered into things I don’t
want to do!
