I once picked up the ladle in a buffet container of salad
dressing to sniff it because the dressings were not labeled and
the room wasn't exactly lit like an operating room. My mother
got nasty with me about that and the old forum raked me over the
coals. All I wanted to do was confirm that the dressing was
what it looked like. Was that worse than putting it on my salad
and throwing out the salad if I didn't like the dressing?
Yes, you were wrong to do that. Even if you're careful, you're
still breathing over the dressing. There's nothing worse than
watching someone do that & them not realizing a little spit came
out of their mouth or their hair / sleeve brushed the food. Why
yes, I have became an expect at nicely moving sample trays from
would-be sniffers :-X

I don't think we need to go over this particular issue again
since Venus was already "raked over the coals" here about it.
Well, no. But the same reaction would be anticipated and she
wouldn't/shouldn't have brought it up if she's still very
sensitive about it.
I think Venus193's post was meant to answer the topic question
by sharing her experience with smelling food. Result being it's
not a good thing to do.
Plus, she learned from her mistake:

Since that time if I can't ID a dressing I just take oil and
vinegar.
I agree with Bada.
