Since that time if I can't ID a dressing I just take oil and
vinegar.

I can describe the scene, but then you will all know my guilty
pleasure, lol.
The real housewife's of Beverly Hills. They are staying at a
ritzy palace type place. They "Bravo" rented the whole place
and it has a private staff with chef. Of course they are all
glammed up sitting at the perfectly set table. They are all
seated and the waiter began serving the soup and described what
it was. One of the "ladies" picked up the soup bowl and brought
it to her nose to take a sniff.
I mainly thought bad of it because they think they are so
classy,. I thought it was trashy. lol

There are many reasons I don't eat at buffets, but if I had to,
I probably would have put a little dab on my plate to
sniff/taste. I don't like people putting their nose near food I
may be eating, although I acknowledge this is my own feelings
and it may not bother other people.
[/quote]
Bold above is what I do. Put a dab on my plate, return the ladle
to the dressing bowl, then switch my plate to my other hand, dab
and taste just a bit with my pinkie finger (I don't know why,
but it must be my pinkie ::)) then switch my plate back to the
original hand so that the finger I used to taste does not touch
the serving ladle.
Is this an acceptable option? I only do it when there is an
unlabeled creamy white dressing, one might be blue cheese (which
I abhor) the other might be a garlic dressing (which I love).
Back to the original topic . . . the only time I think smelling
the food before tasting is if the sniffer was a bonafide food
critic writing a review for this particular meal. I think
other's at the table would understand why the sniffing was being
done and would certainly hope that the critic would not do it at
times when he/she was enjoying a meal with friends.
I vote obviously smelling food before tasting as being rude.

I suppose it is rude and yet, when it comes to ordering fish in
a restaurant, I am guilty. Twice I've been served spoiled fish
when ordering fish and chips. The first time, the odor was so
strong that the people in the booth across from us could smell
it. The second time, it wasn't quite as bad but still very
noticeable. I've had many really good meals but past experience
has left me a little bit paranoid. I try not to be obvious,
though.

Yes, you were wrong to do that. Even if you're careful, you're
still breathing over the dressing. There's nothing worse than
watching someone do that & them not realizing a little spit came
out of their mouth or their hair / sleeve brushed the food. Why
yes, I have became an expect at nicely moving sample trays from
would-be sniffers :-X

I think one of the ladies has been watching too many episodes of
Top Chef or MasterChef where the judges are doing this. I know
last year I had a truffle pasta dish that I wanted to do a face
plant in but instead contented myself by just leaning over to
inhale deeply.

I don't think we need to go over this particular issue again
since Venus was already "raked over the coals" here about it.

Depends. I think saying "this smells AMAZING" and taking a
savoring sniff of your own plated serving is fine. Sniffing to
determine whether a dish is up to your standards is quite
another thing. There are always special-case exceptions, of
course.

Maybe the housewife felt more comfortable doing that because
it's a private dinner and not with an entire restaurant of
strangers? But of course there are the cameras, Lol.

Well, no. But the same reaction would be anticipated and she
wouldn't/shouldn't have brought it up if she's still very
sensitive about it.
