I'm glad the owner is doing it over. I've found that some
stylists are reluctant to go "Full Monty" when you want a lot
taken off. Especially if they haven't heard you talking about it
for a while. I was in NYC, my hair was limp and on my nerves and
I went into a unisex barbershop and asked for a chin
length bob from hair three inches my shoulders. The stylist
asked three times if I was sure and asked if I'd had short hair
before.
Not that that excuses Nicole's actions because you clarified
multiple times and were quite clear.
I hope it turns out exactly like you want it!

I like the style. I hope the owner is able to correct the cut
for you. Maybe start out asking if there is a reason based on
your hair texture this style wouldn't work for you.

I'm glad you contacted the owner. In my opinion, that is the
best way to handle the situation.
Many years ago I suffered through the experience of having my
hair cut by an arrogant individual (a professional, senior
stylist) who completely disregarded my request, going so far as
to say that my desired haircut was too boring and he would give
me the best, trendiest cut for my face. I was young (early 20s)
and gave up after protesting a couple of times. He was rude,
intimidating, and made me feel really small.
Afterward, I shared my dissatisfaction with the salon owner and
I'm ever so glad I did: they apologized profusely, promised to
speak with the stylist, and proceeded to hand over a bag of
full-size Aveda products (my choice) that amounted to well over
$100. Less than 6 months later, I heard that the stylist had
been let go from the salon.

I have to know- how did your hair turn out? Did you get your
layers?

But I don't think this stylist is the person to fix it. She
didn't fix it at the time, when she was asked.

My DD#2 is an owner of a hair salon. She would take any comments
into serious consideration, especially if it were negative,
either at the time of check out or with a follow-up call. So
good for you for contacting the owner.
However, your comment:

>
> She responded that my hair would be shoulder length when it
dried.
>
--- End Quote ---
and the photo that you showed? Are two different things.
DD#2 is not here for her professional comment but I feel that I
have enough knowledge to say that the hair style in the Marlo
Thomas photo you showed did not happen with natural air drying.
It is blown dried with technique using brushes and talent. The
bit of a 'poof' on the top? Another specialty. Yes, it's a
beautiful style but it's not a wash and wear, it takes work to
achieve that look.
I take it you did not ask for a blow dry style treatment.
Perhaps the stylist did give you the correct cut, but without
the follow-up blow dry and additional styling? I can see why you
were disappointed.
Please keep us updated as to your return visit with the owner.

That might be a factor if the OP had just walked out of the
salon and didn't like the way it looked, but I don't think it's
likely to factor in here. The OP posted four days after the
initial haircut, so she's had time to see how it looks dry and
how it styles at home, and she's apparently had this style
before and presumably knows how to handle it (the post with the
image said "I've attached is an image of the type of cut I want
(and which usually looks good on me)"). I also got the
impression that the comments about "when it dried" happened
midway through the appointment, i.e., when she seemed to have
finished cutting and was moving on to next steps before reaching
the length the OP wanted, not when the OP was ready to walk out
the door, so she could very well have dried it after the OP gave
up arguing.
Do you usually have to ask your stylist to blow dry your hair
after they've gotten it wet to cut it? ??? I don't think I've
ever had to proactively ask for a stylist to dry my hair. I've
been to (usually cheap chain) salons that don't wash your hair
unless requested as an add-on service, but if they need to wet
the hair to cut it, they use a spray bottle, and if they get it
wet (by washing or spray bottle), then they either blow it dry
as a matter of course or ask if I'd like it blown dry or left
damp to air dry. When they blow it dry, they do so using a brush
to make it come out looking nice--not a labor-intensive fancy
styling, but they don't just dry it carelessly and leave it dry
but looking limp/messy/etc. If I walked in with dry hair and a
stylist wet it down for cutting, I expect them to return my hair
to a dry state before I leave unless I tell them otherwise--I
would not be impressed if they wet my hair down and then acted
like it getting it dried was a separate service that I needed to
ask for.

So the owner gave me a layered cut. just what I had been
wanting, asked for, and showed pictures of. Yea! Have gotten
compliments on it which I didn't get on the prior cut.
Everything went well. The prior hairstylist, Nicole, was there
but had a client. She gave me a smile and I smiled and nodded
back.
I kinda would have liked to talked to Nicole and perhaps solve
the mystery about why she didn't layer my hair. But it's
probably best we didn't talk.
I'll probably go back since I did get a cut I like.
Jpcher, I don't really understand your post.

Marlo Thomas' hair is shoulder length. Or rather, the hair that
is at the bottom is shoulder length. The middle hair is shorter
and the hair laying on top is even shorter. Those different
lengths together is a layered cut. That's what I have now with
the cut the owner gave me. The owner understood what I meant by
a layered cut and she understood the pictures. And remember,
Marlo Thomas' picture is not what I showed at the salon. Those
were Google docs (gdoc) which I couldn't load here.
I understand that when actors are filming a scene, they have
hairdressers and makeup artists right there that not only prep
and primp them before filming starts, they are prepped and
primped between takes.
My issue with Nicole's cut was that it supposed to be layered
but she cut it all one length. And she cut it 1 1/2" (at least)
below the shoulders, not shoulder length as I had said. For some
reason Nicole thought my hair would dry 1 1/2" shorter than when
wet. My hair does not do that. It only shortens about 1/4" when
it dries. So on my insistence she did cut it shoulder length.
Anyways, all is well that ends well.

My apologies, Isisnin.
I'm suffering with a horrible head cold and probably should not
have posted when I wasn't thinking straight. Just because my
DD#2 is a hair stylist is not a reason to second guess your
judgement on your own hair. You know your head and preferences
much better that I do. Please forgive my rude comments.
Yea! To getting the cut and style that you wanted! ;D
