addressing haircut dissatisfaction with hairdresser

So I've been needing a haircut and have been getting names of
hairdressers from women who have good layered cuts.
Friday I had an appointment with Nicole. I told her I wanted a
layered cut, showed her 4 pictures of the type of layer cut,
explained that I wanted it shoulder length (putting my fingers
up to my hair at the shoulder) and what length for my bangs. She
didn't have any questions. She indicated she understood. I liked
her confidence and her style of cutting.
After a bit I realized that she was finishing up, but the length
was still 2 inches below the shoulders. She responded that my
hair would be shoulder length when it dried. No, I said, it
would only shorten about 1/4 inc, not 2 inches. So she cut the
length again. Then asked if everything was alright, did I like
it? I said what about the bangs and the layers? She again said
something about when my hair dried. I pulled out the pictures
again and pointed out the bangs and the layers. She cut again,
got one side of the bangs done, asked again if it was all ok? I
said what about the layers? She said she could do layers if I
wanted!! But I gave up and said no never mind.
I left and paid full price ($65) and $10. It's been 4 days and
even though it has been a drastic cut from the original length,
only 1 person has mentioned it. Always a bad sign.
I would like to call Nicole and explain my dissatisfaction, but
I don't want her to cut my hair again. Any ideas on how to
discuss a partial reimbursement? Other ideas of what would be
fair?

If you talk to the hairdresser about this, she is going to want
to have a chance to fix it. You probably don't want that.
She is going to ask why you paid and left if you were
dissatisfied. Good question! Although I understand that you were
just done since she wasn't listening to what you were (very
clearly) telling her.
At this point, I think you have to put it down as a lesson
learned, and never go back again.

I did give her a chance to fix it when I was there. I repeated
shoulder length and layered. She shortened it but didn't layer
it. When I pointed that out for the third time, she acted like
she didn't understand. If she tried it again that would have
been her third attempt.
Scenes are not my thing. If I asserted myself any more it would
have been one. Not that I'm a screamer, but I repeatedly said
layered and showed her the 4 pictures twice which equals 8
times.
It's a small place. I'm sure everyone heard. the owner kept
looking over and when I left the receptionist seemed very
uncomfortable.
I'm was thinking of speaking to the owner directly. Maybe she or
someone there would be better suited to fix it. But I feel like
I should at least be courteous to Nicole by speaking to her
first. Not unlike I wanted to be courteous at the salon!

I think you gave her enough chances. How many times do you have
to say it and point out where she left off what you asked for?
I would contact the owner directly. I don't think the stylist
knows what she is doing.

I would chalk it up to bad luck and go elsewhere. Hair
appointments should be pleasurable, not adversarial.
I went through six or seven stylists in two years before finding
one who could cut my fine middle-aged hair in a way that makes
it appear thick and full. Getting a few really demoralizing
cuts along the way. Sometimes those are the breaks.

She isn't the hairdresser for you. I would just not go back. Do
you have friends whose haircuts you really like? I would go to
work finding someone more to your liking, someone who listens to
what you want.

I don't think politeness in any way requires you to talk to
Nicole again, and there's just no point: you repeatedly and
explicitly tried to pull her back to what you had clearly asked
for, and if she wasn't hearing it then she won't hear it now.
I think the person to talk to is the owner, especially as you
say s/he witnessed the whole thing, and see what response you
get - an offer to have it re-done for free by another stylist,
or a straight refund. It's only fair to the business to give
them a chance to fix their employee's foul-up, rather than just
walk away grousing.

I’d just call her and say I gave this a shot but it’s not what I
asked for and I’d like to come in so you can fix it. That’s
all, matter of fact, no scene needed.
If she gives you grief just leave a fair, honest review online
and find someone that listens.

I think the time to ask for a discount is gone. I’d just
resolve not to return.

Well, I called and spoke to the owner. She said she didn't
understand what could have happened as Nicole has 10 years
experience and no complaints. The owner offered to cut my hair.
So we set up an appointment for tomorrow at 5:45 pm. I'm
bringing the pics.
The pics are Googledoc which can't be attached, but I've
attached is an image of the type of cut I want (and which
usually looks good on me). It's Marlo Thomas on Friends which
was rerunning today. Hope that's a good sign!
