And I respected you, too

This was something that happened a while ago, but was brought up
in conversation with a friend yesterday.
I used to follow a particular celebrity (in the broadest sense -
he was from a paranormal show) on Facebook. Obviously I didn't
know him personally but he seemed to be one of the few
paranormal types who made the effort to debunk things, so I
liked him.
Right up until he posted a transphobic meme on his wall. It was
during the debate about which toilet trans people should use,
and was along the lines of "Any man follows my daughter into the
bathroom and I'll beat his skull in." I just remember staring at
it and thinking, "Damn. And I respected you, too."
I simply unfollowed him without comment. He doesn't owe me an
explanation and I doubt he'd offer one anyway. However, a lot of
people had already commented in disgust, which is entirely up to
them.
This came up when talking to a friend yesterday and she told me
I should, in fact, have commented, because it would have been
the right thing to do.
Was it?

There's no right or wrong. Everyone is entitled to their
opinion. However, since his opinion is public, people are free
to respond publicly. You can say you don't agree or how you're
disappointed with his views if you think he'll actually listen
or care. But quietly unfollowing him is a statement all it's own
too.
Maybe he'll change his attitude one day, but personally, I think
disagreeing with him in the heat of the moment will just make
him defensive and double down so I can understand why some
wouldn't even bother.

If you wanted to comment, you could have and should have, but I
don’t think you are obligated to do anything. A person is not
required to “call out” all things disagreed with all the time.
Sometimes just walking away (or unfollowing) is the healthiest
thing to do.

I doubt that being (say) the 53rd stranger to call this guy out
would have made any difference to whether he changed his mind,
or his behavior. There might be a difference between being
criticized by one stranger and many, but this is past that
point. Most likely, either he already gets it, or one more
person pointing out that they disagree would be another fragment
of "evidence" for a belief that he's being piled on.
If you want to pursue this with your friend, you might ask her
what she thought would have been accomplished by you commenting,
in this specific context. Or you could just note that there are,
always, more things that are worth doing than any one person has
time and energy for, and this isn't where you choose to put
yours.

Good idea. I honestly don't think my comment would have made any
difference, and I don't think it's my job to educate someone who
I'm sure is perfectly aware of the opposing arguments already.

We don't have a lot of rules here, but posts that are political
in nature or inflammatory are greatly discouraged.
