We are missing one important fact. What time is this wedding?
Formal daytime is very different from formal evening.
For you, a maxi dress would probably be fine for both, but with
daytime, less blingy accessories if it is not evening.. For your
husband, a linen suit or jacket would be perfect for formal day
time, but maybe not dressy enough for formal evening if what
they are really picturing his tuxedos on the beach, which would
be a terrible idea, in my opinion, but that doesn’t mean it
       isn’t what they are thinking!
I suspect that they may be misusing the word “formal,” and
really what they are envisioning is just nice clothes that we
might even call casual or dressy casual, but they were afraid
that if they didn’t say “formal,” people would see “beach” and
show up in cut offs and flip-flops.
It really can get confusing for guests when hosts make up attire
categories. It can seem clear to them because they’re starting
with what they are picturing and deciding what would describe
that. But the problem is that the descriptor they choose could
describe a lot of other things, too.
       [/quote]
They’re not making it up though, did you see the knot link that
was posted? If you google it, there are heaps of links that
explicitly outline what it means. It’s just a newer category.
Jean, I think that dress is perfect for beach casual. Maybe some
big earrings and a gold cuff? Or embellished sandals and a cuff.
I’m very into the idea of a cuff with that dress.

^But the way I see it, The Knot made up that category. It's
possible the bride heard it elsewhere and doesn't even know what
       The Knot says!
I've gotten skewy invites a couple times over the last 10 years,
and I ask the bride or someone who knows her. I don't worry
about it because I know I won't be the only one.

Well, someone has to make up a dress category. They’re not
handed down from on high. It came up on a few places on the
first page of results alone, and obviously there are enough
beach weddings that it’s a thing. These sort of things are
flexible and adapt with the times. I would be more likely to
assume the bride googled dress code categories and went, hmmm,
that fits what we are doing, people will google it.

I've never heard of beach formal, but it does make me think of
flowy, lightweight, light-colored, natural fiber fabrics and
sandals on both the males and females.

The trouble is that there really isn't an official "beach
formal." If it were me, I'd contact the HC just to confirm "Hey,
is a flowy dress and sandals OK? Should the men wear light
suits, or will white shirts and trousers be all that's
       required?"
If you're getting married on the actual beach, it would likely
be different than if it's just at a beach hotel.

I think it means that they want it on the beach, but they want
it formal, notwithstanding that that is awfully tricky for
guests! Party clothes and beaches do not go well together in my
experience, especially shoes. The best you can do is
beach-friendly shoes and dress with dressy accessories to make
       it seem fancier.

This is what I think too.
