office restroom etiquette issue
By: Songbird Date: May 14, 2019, 3:47 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
So the office officially closes at 5 PM, but there are a number
of people who stay later.
last night I was in the office until about 6 PM. I always stop
in the ladies' room before I leave for the day (long commute).
When I walked into the restroom last night, there was a woman
standing by the sinks, having a conversation on her cell phone
-- on speakerphone. I don't know the woman -- it's a fairly
large office and I don't know a lot of my coworkers. But the
look she gave me pretty much said that she felt I was violating
her privacy by walking into the restroom.
the reality, of course, is that she was the one who was
inappropriate.
I didn't say anything to her, just did what I had to do and
left. she was still on the phone...

Yeah, she was definitely invading your privacy. How egocentric
that she would think that you wouldn't use the restroom so she
can continue her chat. Like a look from her would send you out
of the restroom.

I'm sorry - but people who want to carry on private
conversations on their phones in public places will just have to
put up with the rest of us who are using those places in the way
they were intended to be used. Don't let them bother you, is
what I always say! I've also been known to ask people to put
away their phone when they are at my dinner table too.

That woman really wouldn't like me. If someone is holding a
phone conversation in the restroom & they act annoyed with the
noise, guess who'll flush the toilet more than once. :-*

Yes, this is the perfect occasion for a "courtesy flush"... or
several. They are remarkably effective on people who insist on
parking themselves in the restroom for a conversation.

It makes me so uncomfortable when people are on the phone while
I’m using the restroom. I think if I walked in and someone was
already there I’d either leave or say “could you take that
somewhere else?!”

The worst ones are the women taking selfies in the bathroom. And
since US public restrooms have a gap in the door, pity the poor
person occupying a stall in the background :o

Songbird, is it possible that what you interpreted as an
accusatory look was actually one of embarrassment and dismay, as
she realised that her assumption that nobody would be wanting to
use the facilities and that she was therefore safe to make a
good long private call there was unwarranted? If anyone were to
try to roleplay 'person on phone whose private space has been
invaded' and 'person on phone realising that the space is not as
private as they thought', I doubt that the facial expressions
would be detectably different.

I've done this. More than once.

I personally tend to get Resting Bitch Face after working past
11 hours, especially if I'm preoccupied by multiple things at
once.
