       Yes. A cocktail party with finger foods is what I'm picturing as
       well. And I would eat while they are talking. It's a party.
       People are eating. That's what happens at a party with food. If
       everyone stopped eating just because they were engaged in a
       conversation, there would either be no eating or no talking.
       Eating and drinking and talking at a party is normal social
       behavior, and it all can and does go on simultaneously. At
       least, that's my experience.

       Buggurl, welcome to the forums.
       I agree with the majority about going ahead and eating when at a
       cocktail party with finger foods. Treat the conversation as you
       would dinner conversation if you were seated at a dining table.
       Take small bites when others are talking and wait to answer or
       comment after you've swallowed. But it's not the same thing as
       having to wait to start eating till everyone is settled and
       ready to eat.

       Yes, I was speaking about a cocktail party type of situation,
       and not standing in an actual buffet line.  Sorry about that!
       I thought it was okay to continue eating, like a seated dining
       situation, but I noticed that my DH had stopped eating while
       someone spoke to us, and I wondered if I was being the rude one
       by continuing to stuff my face.  I was paying attention and did
       contribute to the conversation as necessary (without talking
       with my mouth full).
