Eating during a party conversation

The scenario: you are at the party buffet table with your
spouse and filling your respective plates. You move to the side
and start nibbling on your goodies. Another guest comes over
and strikes up a conversation. Do you stop eating until the
person moves on, or do you continue to eat and contribute to the
conversation (after you have swallowed, of course!)?
If you stop eating while that person chats with you, how long do
you stand there with the full plate and not eat, especially if
it's someone who tends to monopolize the conversation?

You can eat. You're fine as long as you're also paying attention
to person talking to you.

Go ahead and eat! It's the same as a sit-down dinner
conversation while standing up.

You can listen with your mouth full, but don't talk with your

True. There is no good reason not to eat while listening,
especially if the food is hot.

I'm a little confused about the logistics. If you are in line or
adjacent to the line, and still standing, I wouldn't start
eating so I cannot imagine the scenario you are describing. But
I also wouldn't stand in the line or adjacent to the line while
someone talked at me. I would probably start to move toward
where I intended to sit and either motion for the person talking
to join me or say, "Let's catch up later - I'm joining Barb and
Jane over her for dinner."
In my experience, in buffet situations, people go through the
line and back to their seats and THEN start eating. I can't
think of a time I have seen people eating while they were in
line or waiting for the person they went through the line with
or on their way to their seats.

Maybe it's a cocktail party where the buffet is finger foods.
That's what I was picturing.
