Even that doesn't make sense and isn't true and is therefore
overstepping by several counties.

I would not assume the secretary actually said this without
speaking to her. The child sounds ill-mannered and the mother
entitled.

to say something like "Oh, Suzie would love to teach little June
sometime" or whatever. (It's still not okay to voluntell
someone, but I can understand that more - it also wouldn't have
built the kid's hopes up as much). But who the heck randomly
picks a date for someone else and just assumes it will work?
Crazy.

Yes. Volunteering someone else without any basis for doing so is
obnoxious but giving a time and place for it to happen is even
more so. What on earth was that secretary thinking? Was she even
thinking?

Very, very good point.

I agree the mother sounds entitled but I disagree about the
child being ill-mannered. She was visibility upset as any child,
even adults, would when something they believe will happen is
not true. She didn't throw a fit or whine or demand (not that we
heard). That was all mom.
I'm really tired of children labeled as brats when they are only
acting and feeling like human beings and not the perfect angels
from some unrealistic movie. Who amongst us can claim they've
never let their emotions get the best of them, even if it just
comes out as a frown?

Also, the child was feeling not only disappointment but the
angry response of the mother. When your mother loses her rag
with another adult over something concerning you, that is always
stressful and upsetting.

Maybe unfair to call the kid ill-mannered based on the limited
information. I said this not because of her disappointed
reaction but because she "ran up" to the lady in the first
place. The way I read that, it sounded obnoxious.
I personally don't hear kids labeled as brats, ever. I do often
see the attitude online that no one should ever have an opinion
or expectations about the behavior of any child. There's an
attitude that kids should be treated like adults at all times
and in all places. I believe adults should be treated with some
politeness beyond how a child treats a peer. I do this for
people older than me, and I expect it of children. I still offer
my seat to anyone that looks like they need it more than me,
too. It's an opinion and my own preference; I'm sure plenty of
people see it an another way.
Anyway, I don't think any actual children were harmed in the
posting of my internet opinion.

A child who happily/excitedly runs up to the person she thought
was going to do a huge and fun favor is ill-mannered? To me, it
sounds perfectly normal. I'd do the same thing as an adult to
express my happiness and thanks.

Since everyone goes to the same church, I wouldn't put "child
excitedly running up to someone" in the bratty category.
There's at least a nominal relationship there.
The secretary's the big problem here, she promised something
that wasn't hers to promise, plus she didn't even bother to let
the crafter know.
