If anyone needs to "make it right" is the secretary; not the
person who not make and knew nothing about the promise.
The mom does not know what that phase means.

I agree with everything except the bold.

Not me. I would have told the secretary and the parent off
already and told pastor to control his secretary better. I
worked in a church and have little tolerance for this type of
abuse.

I resigned from a charitable organization (not only the
position, the whole organization) because of being voluntold. I
am treated better at my part-time retail position, where I am
paid, and am expected to work fewer hours. The head of the
former organization is bad-mouthing me to everyone in the
organization. Just as she did the person who held the position
prior to me. And yet, she holds herself up as a good charitable
person.
Bitter? Why would you think I'm bitter? ;)

I agree with everyone's sentiments. I can't believe the mother
asked the crafter to "make this right." The crafter has nothing
to make right. I like Hmmm's wording to the church secretary.
How presumptuous to schedule someone's time! Let alone for such
a labor intensive task. The mother should have been apologizing
to the crafter for the error, not pressuring further. (But if
everything functioned as it should, we wouldn't have this
board!)

And that's not all she is doing. She is assuming that this
person can teach, which is no means a given (there's a reason
teaching is a profession: many people with a skill totally lack
the ability to communicate how they do what they do) and further
that she is comfortable interacting with young children, which
also not everyone is.

Great points. My dad was a natural in his profession and he
could. not. teach the skills. I followed him around, watched
carefully, asked questions, and, basically, pulled the
information out of him when I worked with him.
Also, in many churches, adults can't volunteer with children
until they have clearances and some corresponding training.

Probably expect her to supply the materials too since she
donates the finish products to the church for free anyway.

Completely agree. The mother is trying to enforce the
voluntelling in order to get what she and her kid want, rather
than truly doing her part to 'make it right' by accepting that
the secretary made a promise she couldn't keep.

What really boggles my mind is volunteering an adult for a
specific date like that without asking. It would make more sense
to say something like "Oh, Suzie would love to teach little June
sometime" or whatever. (It's still not okay to voluntell
someone, but I can understand that more - it also wouldn't have
built the kid's hopes up as much). But who the heck randomly
picks a date for someone else and just assumes it will work?
Crazy.
