Headphones in restaurants

Can I listen to a podcast on my headphones whilst dining alone
in a restaurant? Or is it rude to the waitstaff?

In casual dining locations, it is probably fine. I don’t go to
the more expensive places but I would suspect that at some level
you would reach a point that it would be frowned upon. The key
to not being rude to any of the employees is situational
awareness. If they must struggle to get your attention, then the
headphones might be a bad idea. If you are aware and responsive
when they check on you, then you should be fine.
Now my vent...At least you are going to wear headphones. By
husband and I were in a casual dining location only to have the
joy of a nearby couple start watching something on a phone for
the second half of our meal. As it stands, we waited longer to
not have to sit in the bar in order to avoid the noise of TVs.
It was frustrating to get it, even if low, from a nearby table!

It's fine as long as the staff can get your attention if they
need to, just as it would be fine to read a book or write in a
notebook.
A single earbud, or larger headphones with one over the ear and
one next to it, should be fine.

In that situation, I'd probably use a single earbud. I don't
like both earbuds in while I'm eating, because I can hear myself
chew.

Thanks for replies. I eat lunch out by myself all the time and
often read or write but then I’ll revert to surfing on my phone
which I think is a waste of time.
I travel to different spots through the city, (for work) so the
staff at most of my favourite restaurants know me.
Unfortunately, I don’t have earbuds, I have giant professional
headphones that must have been made for large headed people
because they don’t really fit well. I guess I could get earbuds
just for this purpose but I travel with my headphones for Skype
meetings and such.
But listening to a podcast allows me to also hear what’s
happening around me (no music just a voice in my ear) so when
the server comes I quickly move the phone off one ear to listen
and respond. (I’ve actually only done this once)
I guess it’s ok. It didn’t seem to bother staff that one time I
tried it.
I never linger. By the time I’m finished lunch I can’t wait to
get out of there.

My daughter has misophonia (sensitivity to certain sounds,
especially eating) and thus wears a one-bud earpiece. She is
always courteous to the staff when approached.
