A question:To clear the situation up to just one issue. If
you had not made the chocolate cake would you have been so
concerned that you were offered both pieces of cake.
I realize you do not like the sponge cake but it is not
something that you absolutely can not handle-like-say for me-
raw oyster. Even then I would just set it aside or offer it
to another diner who relished their portion.
Cake can be broken up and moved around. A taste of it with a
bite of chocolate might be the best thing ever.

My usual reply to someone offering me a dessert (or anything) I
don’t like is “I’ve had my share of carbs for the day, but
       thanks”.

There’s got to be SOME upside to being diabetic, right? Sounds
like that’s it–a ready-made excuse that no one can argue with to
       decline foods you don’t want.

There is no upside to being diabetic. It's not funny.

Like when you're saving money on shampoo when you're bald from

I suppose you were making a very poor attempt at a joke, and it
       failed miserably.
What's wrong with you that you could even think anyone would
find this comment even slightly amusing? This is one of the most
ignorant comments I've read here, and "just kidding" (if that's
your excuse for that crappy comment) won't make it any better,
in fact maybe worse because it would demonstrate that you do,
       indeed, know better.

Toots -- I was going to respond to your comment a couple of days
ago but then thought it would be better if I went and drank a
       coke first.
You've been a long time upstanding member to both this community
and the old board so I understand the sentiment of your comment
being tongue in cheek. I get it.

I took it as sarcasm to a condition rather than a joke.dark
humor? A wry comment? I’m pretty sure Toots has celiac disease
so I think I get it.

Whatever toots meant to convey with the comment is difficult to
discern because of the lack of tone.
Regardless, know your audience if you want to say something that
might be misinterpreted or make it clear that you're joking,
       tongue in cheek, whatever.
Finally, if she does have celiac and that was her rationale for
that comment, she should have phrased it better, as in "I have
celiac and I often use that as a reason for not eating something
I don't like" assuming there's gluten in whatever she's served
and there probably is. However, even that still misses the mark
because diabetes is a chronic, often debilitating disease. And
with insulin prices skyrocketing for type 1 diabetics, her post
       was insensitive at best.

Meh . . . we all make mistakes. hovlane have you ever told a
       joke that fell flat?
       I'm diabetic.

Absolutely, but I never joke about diseases and when I otherwise
screw up, I own it which I hope toots does.
The fact that you're a diabetic, to me, makes it worse. You KNOW
how serious it is, and if you're on insulin, does your health
insurance cover it or do you pay out of pocket, other than
       co-pay?
I just don't find anything about it funny, especially when
people are getting sicker and/or dying because they have to
       ration their insulin doses.
