strollers...sigh

I was at a well known theme park last week. It was very
crowded. The evening ended with a spectacular fireworks display
over the castle, after which the crowd moved en masse to the
exits.
And suddenly the "happiest place on earth"...wasn't.
People become unpleasant, even aggressive, in a crowd.
A guy walking behind me, pushing his child's stroller, tried to
push past me and ran over my foot. It hurt enough for me to
cry out in pain.
Stroller guy didn't apologize, didn't even acknowledge that he
ran over my foot.
My boyfriend asked me what was wrong, so I said to him "a guy
pushing a stroller just ran over my foot."
And Mrs. Stroller Guy, who was walking in front of us, said "He
was trying to keep up with his wife, he got cut off."
I didn't respond to her, but I did whisper to my boyfriend that
maybe she should have walked slower so her husband could keep
up.
Seriously it must be frustrating to get separaed in a crowd --
boyfriend and I held on to each other to keep from being
separated -- and I don't know if we were the ones who stepped
between Stroller Guy and his wife.
I raised two children, I spent many years pushing a double
stroller. I don't recall ever running over someone's foot, and
if I had done so, I most certainly would have apologized.
I bit my tongue and said nothing.
Would you have handled it differenly?

People using strollers as battering rams at the parks is a
popular topic of conversation on the DisBoards, a forum for
Disney travel.
I really wish that groups of people would establish a meeting
point near the park entrances, in case they get separated.
Plus, there's always cel phones.

I would not have handled it differently. What the guy did was
rude, but nothing you would have done would have erased the
rudeness or helped the situation, and it very well could have
resulted in an escalation. Crowds are difficult to maneuver, and
people unintentionally bump into others. This guy should have
been more apologetic, but "forcing" a better apology would not
likely result in you being satisfied, nor would it make your
foot feel better. I think you did well to basically just move on
and let it go.

With today's technology, losing your group is almost a
nonexistent concern.
I see nothing that you could have done different. The cry was an
appropriate and likely involuntary reaction. You were simply
factual with your boyfriend and it's too bad that the wife felt
guilty enough to say something... although the appropriate
response would have been "Sorry" and "Are you ok?" What would
have arguing with her done? I am assuming nothing. She nor
husband likely would not have apologized and it was not going to
help your physical pain. You could have called him out in the
moment, but the wife has me convinced that nothing would have
changed. I do, however, hope that internally they both felt bad
enough to proceed with more care.
I hate the stampede effect and will often avoid it when I can. I
have been known to linger after fireworks and such until the
crowd has dispersed and then I head out. It typically only adds
a few minutes to my time and usually lowers my stress level.
There are certainly times when I am ushered out of things or
that I feel that I cannot wait, but when I can, I do.

The strollers that they're allowing are still quite large: "If
your stroller is larger than 31 inches (79 cm) wide and 52
inches (132 cm) long, it won't get inside the park." My guess is
that they're trying to cram more people in for Star Wars
Galaxy's Edge.
They also finally banned smoking inside the parks. Now they have
to enforce it. Given their laissez-faire attitude toward guest
behavior, we'll have to wait to see how that works out.

In the specific case of the Magic Kingdom fireworks, a highly
underrated solution would be to make a mad dash for the exit as
soon as the grand finale begins, and pretend you're running for
your lives while some inferno unfolds behind you.
...No?
