Flowers In The Wind

What’s the proper etiquette when something blows in your yard
from the wind?
A bundle of plastic flowers (probably from someone’s Easter
display) appeared next to the mailboxes last week. I could not
decide if they blew there from the units up the hill (about
twenty townhouses), were placed there hoping the owner was one
of the homes within our section (a different twenty homes), or
if someone was decorating the common area (against home society
rules.) Then on Friday, I watched the flowers blowing in the
wind up my street into my front yard where they have sat for the
weekend. I left them there partly hoping the owner would fetch
them, partly unsure of what to do, and partly because they added
a pop of color to my brown grass! =)
What are my obligations? Do I need to do a door-to-door search
for their home? (That seemed like a lot of work.) Do I contact
the home owner’s board? (That seemed like over kill since they
are volunteers and they are cheap plastic flowers.) Can I toss
them in the trash? (I hate to throw away someone’s property.) Is
there an option that I am not thinking of?
While my particular situation is rather silly, I am curious in
general what one should do?

If something nice showed up, I'd take it in and put up a notice
for it in a common place. I'd probably mention it to my
immediate neighbors. Cheap things (like fake flowers) would go
in the trash. It is a kindness to let it stay in your yard to
give someone a change to pick it up.

If something were to blow into my yard, I'd consider it garbage
and dispose of it accordingly. The only exception would be
documents with personal information on them; those I'd either
return to the appropriate house, or in the event that it was
from far away, either burn or shred them.

If you have no idea who it belongs to, put it somewhere secure
(from the wind) near where you found it; like on a fence post,
on a tree or shrub branch, on a wall. Whoever lost it will
probably look for it and hopefully see it were you left it.
Currently, I have a gas cap on top of my stone wall. It's
probably been a week, so it'll be in the trash soon.

When you first noticed them at the communal mailboxes, did it
appear they were placed there or blown there? If blown there,
and now blown to your yard, I'd be throwing them away. If it
looked like they'd potentially been placed there on purpose, I'd
return to there attached to a rock to keep in place.

Personally I would throw them out since they sat in your yard
for a bit of time. But if you don't want to do that right
away... I'd put them somewhere as close to the road as possible
under a rock or wedged into a fence so they will not blow away.
I would then give it about 48 hours to be collected by the
owner. If not collected, throw them in the trash.
If you're feeling a bit bad about throwing them out, remember
they are plastic and would be bad for the environment if left to
blow away again and get lost in the woods or something.

The proper etiquette is to put paper or metal in the recycling
bin and trash in the garbage can. A friend once found bank
statements tumbling around her yard from hundreds of miles away
after a tornado. One never knows where the item started from or
how long it has been outside.

I really could not tell. They were in the grassy area next to
the mailboxes. If I were to place them there, I would have put
them on top of the mailboxes (although maybe someone did and
they blew off). The second most logical spot would be in the
grass where they were. However, I do not think that they were
stuck in the ground or tied to anything, so that might have just
been their landing spot.
It has probably been about a week since I first noticed them, so
I can only imagine that their owner has forgotten them. :-\ I
may take a walk up the hill to see if anyone has matching
flowers, but otherwise you guys have made me feel confident that
tossing is ok.

This just amazes me! Mother Nature is sometimes beyond
imagination; I just can't fathom documents traveling that far,
but obviously they did.

Well, in 2007 the updraught of two thunderstorms in Australia
sucked a female paraglider up to an altitude of 32,631 feet,
coated her with ice, and finally dropped her - alive - about 37
miles away, three-and-a-half hours later.

If two ordinary thunderstorms can do that, it doesn't surprise
me that an actual tornado can carry bank statements hundreds of
miles.
