       Opinions on Wedding Planners/Organizer book
By: Hanna Date: May 14, 2018, 9:49 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I’m searching for a wedding planner and wanted to see if anyone
       has opinions to share.
I stopped in the bookstore and saw one by Mindy Weiss that
       looked useful.
Also one from The Knot and The Martha Stewart Keepsake planner.
I like the ones that are binders so that I can add and remove
       things as needed.
       Anyone have a planner recommendation?

I thought you meant a person! A Practical Wedding has some good
templates etc for wedding planning, plus I believe the book is
really good and useful. I really like their approach to
weddings, it's really inclusive and forward thinking with some
really practical stuff in there about navigating family and
       financial issues.

No help here I’m afraid. I didn’t use one.
Each to their own but it wasn’t something I found necessary. I
just kept a spreadsheet of costs and that was pretty much it.
But I wasn’t too interested in the finer details. I’m not sure
if that’s where a planner comes in handy.

       I didn't have a specific "wedding organizer" but I did have a
3-ring binder where I kept a lot of my information and
paperwork. I also had a spreadsheet on my computer and used the
computer to print address labels. (The horror, I know! ;) )

       I’ll check that one out!

I also read A Practical Wedding and I found it really helpful!
Really lowered my stress levels lol. There's a blog, as well,
and a pretty detailed checklist and a planner book.
I used TheKnot's binder planner, which was pretty helpful as
well! It had lots of worksheets for figuring things out, and it
was a good place to store contact info etc. I also removed a lot
of the unnecessary sheets bc I wasn't interested in a lot of the
stuff. It had places to store business cards and whatever else
(I put brochures and receipts in the big pocket) and I
three-hole-punched my contracts and kept them all in one place!
Finally, I used the weddingwire.com budget planner pretty
exclusively. I liked that it had separate columns for estimated
cost, actual cost, amount paid, and amount due. It made it way
easier to keep track of my deposits etc.
I used another site entirely for my seating chart. I can't
remember for the life of me what it was.

       So helpful! Thanks everyone.
UserNameHere, oddly, I want to limit many of the details also.
I am thinking having the lists that include all the details will
help me eliminate options. I love having lists and then
crossing things off. I like the idea of a binder full of all
these details so I can cross them off and remove the pages I
       don't care about.. ;D

My wedding organizer was all-digital, and semi-organized. Mostly
       spreadsheets.
Honestly, if I were to do it again, I would either insist on at
least a day-of coordinator (which would have eaten at least 20%
of our small budget), or handed it all to DH and said "Here -
       you plan!"

Oooh, yeah, gotta agree that a day-of coordinator is priceless.
Mine was only $100, but I'd have gladly paid five times that.
Having someone take care of all the dumb little stuff so that I
could just enjoy my own wedding was amazing.
The only thing that she messed up was that she said she put the
top tier of our cake in our room, but she didn't. Not sure where
it ended up. I called my husband on the drive home the next day
to see if he grabbed it, and he said he did... but he thought I
       meant the cake topper. :(

I've always just used a binder and/or accordion file with
dividers. You really don't need one that is specially designed
for weddings, although I'm sure they would be fun and pretty.
As to the other kind of wedding planner: I agree that having a
coordinator is a great investment. Our family used the same one
for our kids' bar and bat mitzvah and both weddings. We can't
imagine doing it without her or someone like her. She didn't
make the plans, she just executed what we wanted.
They save you a ton of money and headaches by helping you avoid
dishonest and unreliable vendors, and they know a lot of tricks
that save so much money that, in my experience, they pay for
       themselves the first day.
They also know what works and what doesn't. They have seen it
all before (the experienced ones have, anyway). So something
that seems like a great idea might be -- but it might not be,
for some reason you can't possibly anticipate, but that they
know from experience, and they can sometimes help you avoid the
       problem and do it successfully.
They remember all those little things that nonprofessionals
can't -- there's just too many -- and they take care of stuff
without even bothering you about it. Like, there will be a
sewing kit in her bag; if the caterer or florist forgot
something or is not following your instructions, she will make
sure it's taken care of, so you don't have to deal with the
       aggravation during your wedding.
And don't forget the value of the peace of mind it gives you
during the months of planning. Every time I would start to
think, "Oh, my gosh, did we forget to/do we need to/do we have
enough/are we too late to/what about ____," I could relax and
think, "Bobbi's on it," and get back to sleep.
So given all the value a coordinator gives, and the fact that
they pay for themselves anyway if they are good, I see it as a
       no-brainer.
