It’s called a pd day, sorry. Professional development day. It’s
where kids stay home but teachers still go to the school and do
stuff. We seem to have about one pd day a month! We have one
this week and then the following week is Easter so kids get
Friday and Monday off lol.
When it was called p a day it was professional activity day

To answer questions: if the bdays didn’t coincide and he wanted
to switch to a Friday I would have thought that was odd. Not
everyone would be able to make it and it would be more hectic
(work, school then a party) instead of our relaxed Sunday
celebration. If fil birthday had fallen on a Sunday this year, I
expect mil would spend the day at church and then graveside. I
also suspect we would push stepsons birthday until the following
Sunday.
Babysitting: this isn’t mil word. It’s my word. Mil says “the
kids are off and so I have them”. Mil enjoys the grandkids but
at times it can get a bit much as sometimes she has her own
things to do. One set of grandkids she picks up from school
three times a week and hangs out till mom gets home. The other
set of grandkids mil picks up at least once a week and drives to
another city for granddaughters dance classes. She also does
almost every pd day. She spends tons of time with those 4
grandkids.
I also suspect that if step son had actually talked to mil, mil
would have said yes to the Friday party. This way she said no to
us and had ya talk to stepson. Mil almost never says no to
things. I can’t remember the last time she said no lol. I’m glad
I asked mil about it and she was comfortable enough to tell us
that’s not really what she wanted.
