S/O Parking spots--Pulling forward

In the "Parking Spots" thread someone mentioned the rule at a
gas station of pulling as far forward as you can. Let's talk
about that.
I know I have been frustrated with people who don't seem to know
that rule (or can't read the sign if it's posted). My
frustration is most often compounded by those rude people who
have to park in front of the doors leading into the mini-mart,
thereby cutting off any room to go around someone to get to the
furthermost pump.
My question, however, is: At what point does your obligation to
pull as far forward as possible end?
I feel that if I've already turned my vehicle off when the car
at the pump in front of me leaves, I really don't have to
restart the engine to move forward 20 feet. I might. But, if
I've already exited my vehicle, I definitely won't even if I
haven't started the process.

I agree with you - If I'm out of the vehicle, I'm definitely not
getting back in and pulling forward. If I've shut the car off?
I'm probably not starting it back up, either, unless there is a
line-up behind me.
I vastly prefer the gas stations where it is a single pump in
each line and the gas pump line is long enough to reach to the
far side of the vehicle, if needed. I actively avoid stations
where it is set up with more than one pump in a line, whenever
possible.
It would be so much easier if all vehicles had the filling port
on the same side! It drives me crazy when someone goes the
wrong way to get to the other side of the car instead of just
pulling the line around the car. I should just pull in, in the
correct direction, facing them and let them back up when they
are done. But I usually don't want to deal with the potential
hassle. Sometime, when I have time to spare, I'll do just that
and wait them out when they complain. At a time of year when
the direction arrows are visible, rather than covered in snow.

I drive an electric car. It would be incredibly rude of me to
stop in front of a pump - even if I'm filling up a gas tank for
my snow-blower (i wish) or my lawn mower (moving to electric
soon). I should leave space for others. In exchange, I think it
is incredibly rude for gas cars to park in electric charging
stations. I see it regularly and it is annoying that they are
parking where I can fuel.

Interesting question - I think your obligation to pull forward
ends as soon as the car is shut off and you're making a move to
get out of the car. I don't think it's reasonable to have to
turn the car over to drift up a few feet. I've been in the
situation where the car in front looks like it's about to pull
out so I pause planning to pull forward and then the driver
starts "fixing" to drive. I'm glad s/he is sending texts,
putting on lipstick, tuning the radio, opening a snack, etc.
before driving. I'm just not waiting to pull forward.

I agree, that's rude. I conceptualize it the same way you do,
it's the same as if I just parked at a pump and took away their
opportunity to fuel.

I don't think it is rude of you at all to stop in front of a
pump if you are filling up a gas can. So what if your car
doesn't take gas? What are you going to do? Park somewhere and
walk over to the pumps with your gas can? I think that would be
incredibly dangerous because people wouldn't expect that and
maybe wouldn't see you.
I've had people annoyed with me when I'm at a pump, filling up a
bunch of gas cans AND filling the truck but it's kind of an
'Excuse me for living' situation. You do what you have to do in
as safe a manner as you can do it.

Here in NJ, we don't pump our own gas, there is a attendant,
they will almost always ask you to pull forward, whether there
is another car behind you or not. At least this has been my
experience, anyway.

Same. If it doesn't look like the car in front is actually
going to pull away in a few seconds, I don't think I should have
to wait indefinitely *just* so I can pull forward. It's possible
I'll be halfway through pumping before they're ready to go

Oh, I agree with your second paragraph! However, I have
discovered a small ish gas station off the main roads that is
consistantly $0.10 to $0.15 lower than any others nearby.
